More than 200 times each year, the citizen first responders of King County Search and Rescue are called to provide essential emergency services. Missions range from backcountry technical rescues to urban searches for a missing person with dementia to community aid during natural disasters. Nine specialized units with six hundred members (registered Washington State emergency workers) train and stay ready to respond when called. Combined, they dedicate more than 49,000 hours to mission response and training each year. The King County SAR teams deliver an estimated $8 Million in public safety value to Washington State each year.

Visitors of all ages and abilities feel welcome at the refuge and enjoy spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities. The refuge continues to be an important component of the local economy and community, and provides a full complement of quality wildlife-dependent recreation, education and interpretation programs, and other public uses. We work closely with our friends, local citizens, and partners to enhance and improve nature-based tourism through community outreach, education, and advocacy.

To be experienced are deep forests and open vistas; a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers; signs and sounds of wildlife; and activities associated with local economies and timberland management.

Recreation opportunities are plentiful in the Town of Poultney. The Town’s Recreation Commission provides a year-round program for children and adults. Many private organizations also provide social and recreational opportunities. The Delaware and Hudson (D&H) Hiking Path, local rivers and streams and Lake St. Catherine provide outdoor recreational opportunities. The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) uses the D & H right-of-way and an extensive system of trails.
