South Lake and Moss Lake Trail Restoration

The 3-million-acre Superior National Forest contains 2,000 lakes, 400 miles of hiking trails, and one of the most visited, federally designated wilderness areas in the country, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

Applicant: Northwoods Volunteer Connection
Project Location: Superior National Forest, Minnesota
Amount Awarded: $10,810.00

South Lake and Moss Lake Trails are important access routes into the BWCAW and Border Route Trail. This project will restore five miles of severely eroded trail and remove confusing social trails by installing boardwalks, erosion control structures, and rehabilitating tread. Trail stabilization will reduce severe erosion and mudslides that negatively impact the Moss and South Lake’s aquatic ecosystem. The work will be conducted by volunteers from Northwest Volunteer Connections, the Border Route Trail Association, and the North Country Trail Association in partnership with the Superior National Forest. The work will take place in July of 2024 and 2025 with crews of eight volunteers working seven days each year.
