Yellowbelly Trail

Trail drainage maintenance will result in a reduction in erosion from trail tread and reduction in sediment delivery to the stream that flows into and out of Farley and Toxaway Lakes, where trails are near or cross it. Functioning drainage and new puncheons will also increase resiliency of the trail to precipitation and runoff. If old puncheons collapse and fail they are not only dangerous to trail users, but the debris can block natural drainage patterns and result in additional erosion. The stream this trail follows is a tributary to Alturas Lake Creek, habitat for anadromous chinook salmon and bull trout, a TES species.

Applicant: Idaho Trails Association
Project Location: Ranger District, Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho
Amount Awarded: $11,000.00

Work on the puncheons will result in fewer hikers and stock users crossing the meadow off the currently unsafe walkway, which results in damage to surrounding riparian vegetation and soils. A functioning walkway will help preserve valuable hydric soils and vegetation. Sawtooth NF, Yellowbelly Trail: maintain drainage features on 5.6 miles of trail between Farley, Petit and Toxaway Lakes. Assist Forest Service in building new puncheon/boardwalks along trail between these lakes (trail is largely within stream corridor/wet meadow habitat). Idaho Conservation Corp is also planned for a week on this project, and ITA will work with them directly or work directly before or after them. The goal for ITA on this project is to rebuild one puncheon and start on a second if time permits in August of 2023, then return in July or August of 2024 to build an additional puncheon, or more than one. This work is anticipated to take 2, 7-day hitches. In total, 19 puncheons must be rebuilt over several years, making this a large effort.

ITA staff will begin recruiting volunteers for this project in the spring of 2023, planning project details and communicating with volunteers leading up to the project. A description of the trip, along with a map, will be posted on our website for prospective volunteers to read before signing up.
