A 2.5-mile segment of the Catamount Trail located on the Manchester District of the Green Mountain National Forest will be improved, including hardening water crossings and muddy sections, smoothing out parts of the trail, and re-establishing proper drainage.
The Catamount Trail is a winter-only cross-country ski trail that travels 300 miles along the length of Vermont. This is a legacy trail that currently has sections with a significant amount of deferred maintenance, this section being a primary example. This project will not only address resource damage like erosion and compacted soils, but it will also improve the trail to make it more skiable in a changing climate with less snowfall. The work will take approximately three weeks, using local youth conservation corps to complete the trail hardening and drainage work.
