This project focuses on the Slippery Ford section of the Pony Express National Historic Trail, which provides access to cultural history, scenic hiking, and rock climbing at Lovers Leap.
Over the course of six weeks in Summer 2024, Access Fund will partner with Climbing Resource Advocates of Greater Sacramento and Eldorado National Forest to build technical trail infrastructure along a popular one-mile stretch of this historic trail. Access Fund will provide a team of expert trail builders, the Conservation Team. They will perform construction while training and leading volunteers to address crucial deferred maintenance of erosion and water control structures. Local partners will provide marketing, recruitment of volunteers, and financial support. Project outcomes include decreased erosion and channel incision; prevention of vegetation loss from trail widening, braiding, and social trail use; increased access and safety by providing a durable and stable walking surface; and enhanced visitor experience.
