Black Canyon and Trail Creek Drainages

The Black Canyon Drainage Improvements project involves the following parts: Mitigating invasive species at Trail Creek trailhead to prevent their spread further onto the national forest. Adopting a series of user created trails that have formed in the wide Nordic grooming corridors near the Trail Creek trailhead. We are referring to these as the OPR Loops. Trails that make up 5 loop options on sustainable corridors will be adopted and improved. Trails that are unsustainable or lead to dead ends or private property will be closed and rehabbed.

Applicant: Friends of Pathways
Project Location: Jackson Ranger District, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyoming
Amount Awarded: $14,000.00

Addressing drainage issues on the Black Canyon trail including, drainage dips, turnpikes, puncheons, bridges, and small reroutes to move the trail further away from the creek.

Converting portions of the Black Canyon logging road into a trail and closing and rehabbing the rest of the road. This will form a connector with the Big Rocks trail to form a loop that does not have to share the lowest section of the Black Canyon trail. This will involve fixing the drainage issues on the road with culverts, turnpikes, bridges, check damns, steps, and small reroutes.

This project will involve staff from FOP and the BTNF. FOP will hire Montana Conservation Corps crews to complete the weed mitigation, reroutes, bridge and drainage features. FOP will also hire the head trail builder from the Teton Free Riders, another trail advocacy group in the valley that does excellent machine work, to complete the turnpike and road closure portions of the project. We will also host volunteer groups to help with different parts of the project.

The project will take two summers to complete, and we will be starting work at the trailhead and progressing up the trail.
