Although the Rio Fernando de Taos has long been ignored, a community-wide initiative is underway to revive and safeguard the watershed.
This project will focus on enhancing sustainable recreation opportunities on public lands while raising awareness about the river. The project involves rerouting fall-line trails, closing unofficial paths, constructing a retaining wall in a high-traffic and erosion-prone area, revamping neglected tread, and installing a wetland bridge. These measures will mitigate erosion, improve community access, and alleviate trail user conflicts. The restoration project will span the 2024-2025 trail seasons, and we'll collaborate with our local Youth Corps (RMYC), local landscape businesses, Enchanted Circle Trails Association's Adopt-a-Trail program members, and the Rio Fernando de Taos Watershed Revitalization Collaborative. Targeted species benefiting from the effort include the Mexican Spotted Owl, Northern leopard frog, Northern goshawk, Pinyon Jay, Wilson's warbler, Rio Grande cutthroat trout, Nokomis fritillary butterfly, Gunnison's prairie dog, Masked shrew, Water shrew, and Robust larkspur.
