Building upon the successful completion of Phase 1 in 2022, the Santa Fe Fat Tire Society (SFFTS) proposed to the U.S. Forest Service in Jan 2023 Phase 2 of the Arroyo Hondo project, aiming to expand the existing trail network by 25.6 miles.
Phase 2 involves redesigning and rerouting existing closed roads (12 miles) and user-created trails (7.1 miles), ensuring their sustainability and compatibility with watershed protection. Some unauthorized trails/roads will be decommissioned or converted into official trails at the discretion of SFNF. Notably, Phase 2 includes modifications to convert 8 miles of old logging roads to 3-wheel adaptive mountain bike trail.
Milestones:
As trails are completed, signage/maps will be updated. Some work will be volunteer hand crews and some will be contracted machine work with local trail building companies.
