by American Trails Staff

Since we began the NRT Photo Contest in 2003, we've seen a great variety of trails captured by photographers around the nation. We sponsor the annual Photo Contest in celebration of these great trails and to highlight the diversity of NRTs, from backcountry trails to urban greenways.

2022 is no exception. For the second year in a row we received a record-breaking number of submissions. There were 591 images of National Recreation Trails submitted and the winners range from a daring catwalk trail in New Mexico to an accessible trail in Oregon. Winter trails are represented, as are rail-trails, backcountry hiking and equestrian trails, and well-traveled commuter trails. As always, the photos show the love we have for these NRTs and how they improve our quality of life.
