Maintenance and Rehabilitation

Cal-Ida connector Trail

Program Manager Paul Hart has almost completed the construction of a new 20 mile multi-use motorized single-track trail connecting the Cal-Ida area to the greater Downieville trail system. The connection will successfully link the Hall’s Ranch trail to the Chimney Rock trail.

The connection will also provide access to the Fiddle Creek Trail and Trailhead near Cal-Ida Campground. This will provide additional recreational opportunities while mitigating impacts to natural resources such as wildlife, watershed and soils, as well as realigning existing trail segments to provide for a sustainable trail system, address erosion concerns, and improve trail user experience. The project will only focus on the rough cut of the new trail. The finished trail product will be completed by another grant through the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle and Recreation Division.

That grant will focus on items such as tread armoring, culvert installation, signage installation, trail adjustments for user enjoyment and finish trail tread.
This RTP Grant Scope includes:

  • 20 miles of rough cut trail construction.
  • Rough cut trail will be completed with various partners and equipment.
  • Purchase a Sutter 300 single track dozer
  • Purchase a Mini-Excavator
  • Forest Service crews will primarily cut tread with a Sutter 300/Mini-Excavator and clear brush along approx. 18 miles.
  • Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship will rough cut tread with a mini excavator and staff will clear corridor on 3 miles.
  • Cal-Fire CDC crews will primarily cut corridor and rough cut tread on 5 miles of steep and extremely brushy terrain.
  • Nevada County Woods Riders will help cut corridor and tread.
