The Appalachian Trail Conservancy analyzed trends and obstacles in volunteerism and crafted a multi-pronged approach to address opportunities to make volunteering open to all and easy to do. Learn about the strategies and tools the Conservancy developed to enhance volunteer recruitment and engage more new volunteers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the value of a Volunteer Engagement Plan
  • Explain the benefits of value proposition, audience segmentation, selection of communication channels and communication needs.
  • Incorporate training of new volunteers and existing volunteers into opportunities for recruitment and retention.

    Leanna Joyner is the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Senior Director for Partnerships and Trail Operations. In this role, she collaborates with 30 partner organizations in 14 states to mobilize more than 4,700 volunteers annually. A hiker, gardener, and dancer, Leanna lives in Asheville, N.C.
