History can be read as a millennia-long struggle to free ourselves from the need to walk; it’s easier to ride than walk. But things are changing, as an increasing number of people are now choosing to walk.
Walking can improve our health, stimulate our thinking, contribute to conservation, celebrate our evolutionary heritage, slow our frantic lives, experience the world at a human-pace and scale, and make us happier in the process. Walking is simple, but it can be profound.
In this webinar, Bob and Martha Manning will 1) encourage us to walk more in our everyday lives and consider long-distance walking, 2) outline the history and philosophy of walking, 3) offer guidance on how to prepare for walking, and 4) celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the National Trails System.
The webinar is based on Bob and Martha’s books, Walking Distance: Extraordinary Hikes for Ordinary People and Walks of a Lifetime: Extraordinary Hikes from Around the World. These books offer first-hand descriptions of 60 long-distance and multi-day hikes they’ve walked and present a series of short essays on multiple dimensions of walking. They’ll conclude their presentation with some slides from their walks on a number of US national trails.
