The West Virginia Department of Transportation is the state agency responsible for transportation in West Virginia. The Department of Transportation serves an umbrella organization for seven subsidiary agencies which are directly responsible for different areas of the state's infrastructure.

The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy promotes, encourages and works for the conservation – including both preservation and wise management – and appreciation of the natural resources of West Virginia and the Nation. We focus primarily on the Highlands Region of West Virginia, but our work is for the cultural, social, educational, physical health, spiritual and economic benefit of present and future generations of residents and visitors alike.

The West Virginia Land Trust is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to protecting West Virginia’s natural lands, scenic areas, water quality, and recreational access forever. Since 1994, the organization has permanently protected more than 10,000 acres of land statewide.

The WV Rails-to-Trails Council is a statewide advocacy and networking organization that helps connect people and communities with resources to plan, acquire, build and maintain rail-trails in West Virginia and promote existing rail-trails to trail users. WVRTC supports local rail-trail initiatives throughout the state. WVRTC also supports linking rail-trails to create long distance trail networks across West Virginia and into our neighboring states.

The WVURC was created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1985 to support research at West Virginia University, and provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University.
The WVURC receives and administers funds awarded by external agencies for research and other activities and is responsible for helping protect intellectual property through patents, copyrights and licensing agreements for start up companies based on University research.
