The vision for the Mountain Stewards arose in the summer of 2003. A small group who regularly hiked the Southern Appalachian Mountain region began to feel that what they were experiencing on their hikes should be enjoyed by others. Although many old trails existed, most were not marked and did not show up on any map. And although many of these trails came within close proximity to each other, often they did not connect.
The desire to share the richness of the mountain environment and the need to mark and connect trails in order to make them easily available to others led to the creation of the Coalition of Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards, Inc.
