Trail Worker Award

This award recognizes an individual that has made outstanding contributions and provided consistent support for trail planning, development, or maintenance. It is intended to recognize the efforts of a private or public sector individual working for enhanced trail recreation on either the local, state, or national level.

Illinois: Steve Buchtel

Enthusiasm for his job, for trails and for partnerships are the hallmarks of Steve.

As the Southland Director for the greater Chicago area’s Active Transportation Alliance, he works in one of the state’s most challenging environments, with many blue-collar, economically-struggling communities.

In spite of these challenges, Steve has led efforts to establish the 15-mile Pennsy Greenway between Lansing, IL and Crowne Point, IN, and the 26-mile Cal-Sag Trail through 14 communities south of Chicago. Steve is a born “trails salesman” and believes trails are more than just recreation or transportation, but can change communities.
