Sustainable Trail Maintenance

The session will cover vegetation trimming, deberming and maintaining outslope, constructing knicks and rolling grade dips, and other typical trail maintenance requirements. Students will gain field experience maintaining existing trails on the Rockingham Community College campus.

Participants will learn about advanced trail maintenance techniques. The session will cover trail tread narrowing and rehabilitation, armoring, checkdams, and trail closure and reclamation. OSI Creede Crew Leadership for Ecological Restoration

Learn the value and basic practice of ecological restoration and how to motivate and lead others in restoration tasks. This exciting two-day workshop will cover the fundamentals of crew leadership and ecological restoration including basic planting, seeding and erosion control techniques. Participants will be expected to complete a 4-5 hour online course delivered through Colorado Mountain College covering leadership techniques, tool and crew safety before attending the weekend workshop.

Participants will learn how to take a critical look at trails to assess condition, maintenance, and safety. The session will also cover potential permitting requirements and trail contracting for natural surface sustainable trail projects. Students will discuss how trail condition, maintenance, and safety can affect the "trail experience", and they will also learn and discuss how the interpretation of assessment results may vary depending on user group and trail difficulty. Participants will complete desktop trail reviews, assess existing trails and proposed reroutes on the Rockingham Community College campus, discuss permits, and create contracts based on assessment results.

This session will guide participants from desktop trail planning to design and layout, corridor flagging, and pin flagging of a trail alignment in the field. Participants will build on skills and knowledge they gained in the sustainable trail assessment class. Students will focus on critical assessment of a trail system in the area. The session will cover creating a trail assessment document to present findings and proposed recommendations.Students will gather the necessary information through field work to write a trail assessment document. **Interested participants should have a thorough understanding of sustainable trails and trail assessment experience before taking this class - prerequisite required.
