Victim Blaming in Crash Reporting: What It Is and How To Stop It

The World Health Organization characterizes traffic deaths as a “preventable health epidemic”. Yet, this issue has not generated a widespread, longstanding call to action. Why not? The field of media studies offers potential insights. News coverage is known to shape public opinion by framing issues for the public and via sentence‐level editorial choices. With this in mind, we reviewed 200 local news articlesband found that coverage tends to shift blame towards vulnerable road users and away from drivers.

Taking Steps Toward Measuring the Pedestrian Environment

This webinar will discuss quantitatively measuring the pedestrian environment with case studies from Fort Worth, Oregon, and Montgomery County, MD. We'll also discuss how pedestrian infrastructure often gets pushed around to accommodate better signal timing and reduce vehicle delay. We'll explore a number of ways the City of Toronto evaluates pedestrian infrastructure and look at the case study of a missing crosswalk link at a major downtown intersection.

Leave No Trace – From Science to Application in Parks and Protected Areas: Strategies for Influencing Visitor Behavior

Recreational use of our shared public lands is increasing exponentially. With that increased use comes increased impact. Though some of those impacts are unavoidable, most are entirely avoidable. The majority of people venturing outside are ill-equipped with the basic Leave No Trace skills to minimize their individual but cumulative impact on the places they visit.
