The first ever American Trails Developer Awards were given to three American communities at the 2008 National Trails Symposium.
In 2006 there were two well-deserving candidates that have exemplified outstanding success in attracting visitors to trails by combining location with creative design.

In 1987 a White Mountain, Arizona, horsemen’s association of 25 members organized a volunteer group, TRACKS, to build and maintain trails for horseback riding.
Missouri, best known as the “Show-Me State” and “Gateway to the West,” is home to an extensive trail system that allows users to explore the varied natural landscapes of the state.
Roger Sabine’s impact on the burgeoning West Michigan Trails movement began in the 1980’s with the development of an idea that would lead to Kent Trails.
Michigan is home to one of the largest interconnected trail systems in the country.
