Trail Stewardship Internships

Time Commitment: June 8th—August 13th, 2020

Help steward a 740-mile water trail that traverses New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine! This summer the Northern Forest Canoe Trail is hiring three Stewardship Interns. Interns will travel across the Northern Forest working with staff and community volunteers to complete a variety of campsite, river access, and portage trail projects along the region's waterways. This is a great opportunity to learn new leadership, teamwork, trail construction skills while completing meaningful projects to improve access to our waterways.

Applicants should be at least 19 years of age, have an enthusiasm for physical work and outdoor living, and an interest in obtaining hands-on trail, leadership, and volunteer management skills in preparation for a future career in conservation and related fields.

Required Qualifications

  • 19 years of age by the time the internship begins
  • Wilderness First Aid Certification before participating in the internship
  • Ability to camp out in remote locations
  • Enthusiasm for physical work and outdoor living
  • Experience working in a group setting
  • Solid work ethic
  • Valid driver's license
  • Some paddling experience preferred
  • Interest in exploring careers in conservation, recreation, and related fields

Salary and Benefits

$3,000 ($300/week) compensation, plus food during work week. Reimbursement for work related travel in personal vehicles. Trainings in paddle skills, trail management, leadership, and timber and stone construction techniques. Academic credit can be arranged.
