Trail Inventory Team Members (4 positions available)

Location: This is a field-based, highly mobile position requiring extended travel, supervised by ACE's Salt Lake City, Utah Office. Team members will be traveling to USFWS lands nationwide.
Time Commitment: Term 1: (2 Positions) Start Date - End Date: late April-May 2020 - 26 weeks from start date Term 2: (2 Positions) Start Date - End Date: mid-June 2020 - 26 weeks from start date

Position Description

Trail Inventory Data Collection Team Members will travel to an estimated 75 stations. This position is highly mobile and will require extended and frequent travel and the ability to be adaptive to ever changing locations, situations, and environmental conditions.

  • Participate in trail inventory data collection training.
  • Continuous travel to National Wildlife Refuges and National Fish Hatcheries across the nation, spending on average 1-3 days at each location.
  • Conduct daily trail inventory activities, walking trails in all weather, recording trail data (e.g., location, length, slope, condition, deficiencies) using GIS enabled technology.
  • Provide appropriate documentation of inventory (photos, data points, reports).
  • Coordinate with the Trail Inventory Data Manager, Trail Inventory Logistics Coordinator, Trail Inventory Project Leader and others to ensure data is accurate and delivered in the required format by determined deadlines.
  • Participate in check-in calls with the Trail Inventory team to report progress and discuss obstacles.
  • Assist the Trail Inventory team with processing field data and other project related tasks.
  • Assist with other tasks specific to the assigned FWS station as time permits.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a degree or be pursuing a degree in ecology, wildlife management, natural resource management, earth science, parks and recreation, rangeland management, or other related disciplines appropriate to the position. A relevant combination of experience and education is also acceptable.   • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be between the ages of 21 and 30 (35 if military service).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record. No personal vehicle is necessary as all travel between refuges and on site will be in the ACE project vehicle.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically and brainstorm creative solutions.
  • Willingness to represent ACE and USFWS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.

Desired Qualifications

  • Education and/or experience in data collection, trails construction/maintenance, GIS, or natural resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the USFWS.
  • Experience identifying and addressing challenges on a project before they become issues.
  • Strong desire to enter public service as a conservation professional.

Salary and Benefits

Compensation: Members will contribute ~40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $400/week paid out biweekly for food and incidental living expenses. Lodging and transportation will be provided during travel. AmeriCorps: Members MAY be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award for up to $3097.50 upon the successful completion of service.
