Trail Crew Technical Advisors

Time Commitment: June 17th to September 16th (14 weeks)


The mission of the Pacific Crest Trail Association is to protect, preserve and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as a word-class experience for hikers and equestrians, and for all the values provided by wild and scenic lands. To support our mission, we are hiring experienced trail crew leaders who want to improve the physical condition of the PCT.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Work with and supervise volunteer and corps crew trail crews while teaching trail maintenance skills.
  • Coordinate and oversee a variety of projects on the Pacific Crest Trail.
  • Manage project planning, backcountry logistics, and project implementation.

This is a full-time hourly seasonal staff position in which a majority of work time will be spent in the field leading trail maintenance projects. Weekly compensation will depend on the project schedule but will generally exceed $800 per week. Dependable personal transportation is required and mileage is reimbursed up to PCTA travel reimbursement guidelines. Rental vehicles can be provided when needing to transport large quantities of tools and equipment or when extensive travel on rough unpaved roads is required. The temporary position makes a meaningful impact on the maintenance of the PCT and the experience it provides. The position is an excellent introduction to PCTA, which is a growing organization planning to add more year-round trail positions.

Required Qualifications

What makes you a great fit for a technical advisor position:

  • Minimum of two years of relevant professional experience or five years of substantial volunteer experience
  • Experience in training, managing, and leading trail crews
  • Extensive knowledge of safety protocols
  • Great interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Trail design, construction, and maintenance skills
  • Backcountry living and Leave No Trace knowledge
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel, work, and camp on the PCT in remote, backcountry locations
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Additional desired knowledge:

  • Experience working with land management agency partners
  • Wilderness first aid and CPR certifications
  • Crosscut and/or chain saw certification of U.S. Forest Service B – Bucking level or higher
  • Familiarity with horse and mule packing

Salary and Benefits

Weekly compensation will depend on the project schedule but will generally exceed $800 per week.
