Trail Crew Member (California State Parks)

Time Commitment: May through October or November weather dependent. The project is expected to last a couple of seasons.


This position will work within the Resources section of the California State Park’s in the Sierra District. The selected candidate will assist the District’s Trail Crew Leader in leading a crew with the construction of trails and trail structures. Primary focus will be the construction of a new trail at Grover Hot Springs State Park while completing other various Natural Resource projects throughout the District as needed.

Job Responsibilites

This position requires hands on involvement with the construction of ADA compliant boardwalk, footbridges, tread surfaces, and rock work. The selected candidate will also assist the Trail Crew Leader in the supervision and training of California Conservation Corps crew members.

Work schedule will either be Monday-Thursday, 0730-1730 or a 8 day on 6 day off 10 hour day. Temporary housing may be available, if not the candidate will be required to spike camp during the workdays at the worksite, per diem will be available.

The worksite is entirely outdoors and will require the candidate to work in variable weather conditions to include; snow, cold, heat, rain and wind.

Required Qualifications

This position will involve the use of various hand and power tools for the construction of boardwalks, bridges, rock walls and other trail related features. Applicant should be familiar with basic carpentry and wood working skills and previous rock work experience is desired. This position requires the ability to motivate and work with people of varying ages and backgrounds. Leading crews by providing specialized training, teaching safety, and ensuring daily work productivity and quality are being met are essential job functions. Working conditions and tasks will require extensive physical labor including, but not limited to: heavy lifting (50+ lbs), use of power tools to cut lumber and construct bridges, chainsaw use, rock shaping/lifting, and the use of wheel barrows to transport tools and materials over rough un-even terrain in variable weather conditions. A valid California driver’s license is required.

Salary and Benefits

$12.72 - $14.33 per hour
