The Adirondack Trail Improvement Society maintains 105 miles of public hiking trails and 15 miles of private trails in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. The trails are located within some of the most scenic wilderness on the east coast and travel from 1000’ to 5000’ in elevation.

Maintenance is performed by a professional crew of generally 6-8 members from mid-May to early August. The season begins with a patrol of the entire trail system to remove winter blowdown, clean existing drainage structures, and assess damage from the winter. Following the patrol, the crew will work on selected projects for the remainder of the season to repair, harden or reroute trails. The crew is also responsible for maintaining and, if necessary, rebuilding 20 bridges and 24 ladders in the trail system.

Required Qualifications

Crew members are typically college or post-college age. Preference is given to those who can work all or most of the 12-week season though shorter periods of employment are possible. Candidates should be physically fit and be able (and desire) to work and live in the backcountry in all conditions doing physical labor. Backcountry and trail work experience preferred, but not essential to apply. Experience with carpentry, masonry, rigging, and/or tree work preferred. First Aid training preferred. Primitive housing (canvas wall tents, wooden platforms, running water, electricity, propane) provided.

Salary and Benefits

$11.00 - $16.00 per hour depending on experience. Living accommodation and some food provided.
