Big Bear Trails Program Manager

Time Commitment: Full-time Exempt Status with Benefits (minimum 40 hours per week) at-will employment.
The Big Bear Trails Program Manager is responsible for working under the direction of the Assistant Executive Director for the Southern California Mountains Foundation and in conjunction with community stakeholder groups and local agencies, City of Big Bear Lake and County of San Bernardino to recruit, train, organize and track volunteers working on non-motorized trail maintenance, improvements, and signage throughout the Big Bear Valley. The position will be responsible for working with and supervising volunteers and corps members in the field.
- Identify maintenance needs on trails throughout the Big Bear Valley (collect and manage feedback from the public, partner agencies, and field assessment).
- Create work plans for project implementation for all trails projects and go through proper channels to get approval for projects before implementation – coordinate with multiple agencies; City of Big Bear Lake, San Bernardino County, USFS, contract crews, scout groups – all adopt-a-trail groups.
- Promote corporate and community involvement in the adopt-a-trail program to ensure all non-motorized trails have been adopted.
- Collect and maintain all volunteer contact information, liability forms, JHA’s and track all volunteer hours.
- Report all accomplishments for non-motorized projects as completed (minimum of monthly); coordinate tracking with all stakeholder groups to meet trail improvement tracking needs. Report accomplishments to the advisory group on a quarterly basis (the advisory group is made up of SCMF, USFS, City, Mammoth Mountain Resorts, County)
- Schedule and implement workdays for adopt-a-trail groups including companies, agencies, and individuals.
- Recruit and train and recruit volunteer leads/trail leaders to assist in implementing project work (all project workdays will require a trial leader with some level of training).
- Track and report all restoration, trail building, crew work in line with state and federal grant requirements (ie. before and after photos on all projects, mileage build and maintained, number of volunteers, and hours contributed)
- Coordinate and implement valley-wide trail sign plans; work through proper channels for approval process with different agencies (city, state, private) to create a cohesive sign plan for non-motorized trails throughout the Big Bear Valley with the opportunity to expand to other SBNF areas.
- Publicize and recognize volunteer and corporate partners for their contributions.
- Maintain service of hand-tool inventory and other supplies
- Work with partner/community groups to support the needs of trails throughout the Big Bear Valley.
- Perform other related and peripheral duties as required and necessary for the successful performance of this job.

- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience building and managing successful team efforts.
- A passion for the personal, social, and economic benefits of outdoor recreation. Knowledge of the Big Bear Valley and San Bernardino Mountains geography preferred.

- Organized and Self-Sufficient: Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent time management and project management skills.
- Computer Savvy: working knowledge of contemporary technology, including GIS, digital photography, file sharing, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), and working knowledge of contemporary office technology including word, excel, email, GPS applications, and the internet.
- Problem Solver: Ability to analyze situations, develop strategies, and implement solutions.
- Versatile and Flexible; time will be spent both inside doing desk work and outside getting dirty while doing trail work.
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited university or college. A variety of educational backgrounds may be considered, including urban regional planning, natural resource or recreation management, public administration, business, or a related field.
- CPR and First Aid training certifications are required within 60 days of hire.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license.
- Must have the means to travel by motorized vehicle on paved and dirt roads to trail locations in the San Bernardino National Forest.
- Working and modern computer and cell phone with which to maintain internet and email communication and conduct business.
- Experience working and recreating in the outdoors.

- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to hike over rough terrain for up to 10 miles, carrying 50lbs of equipment in a bag or backpack, performing emergency first aid and rescue skills outdoors, and using hand tools to maintain a dirt-based multi-use trail. The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. - Position requires prolonged or intermittent sitting, standing, walking/hiking on the level, uneven, or slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, stooping, and crouching. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in preparing reports and using a computer keyboard and hand tools in the performance of daily duties. The need to lift, carry, push and pull materials up to 50 pounds is required. The employee will be required to travel to different sites and locations; when working outdoors the incumbent may encounter extreme weather conditions; including wet, hot, cold, wind, snow, ice, and heavy vehicle traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate when indoors and moderate to loud when outdoors
- Candidates must be able to see in the normal visual range with or without correction and hear in the normal range with or without correction. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth, and perception. Hearing requirements include the ability to properly use a two-way radio and telephone while around groups of people to communicate with other personnel.

Salary and Benefits
Salary range $48,000 - $62,000 based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance, and 403(b) options. 10 days paid vacation per year and annual accrual of 10 days paid sick leave, plus 11 paid holidays annually.
