Advocacy and Engagement Manager

The Advocacy and Engagement Manager is a new role that will provide focused support to build on our core value of conservation advocacy and further our conservation mission to protect the outdoor experience. Reporting to the Conservation and Advocacy Director, this position will contribute to the organization’s conservation and advocacy program through thoughtful content development, managing advocacy campaigns, tracking conservation and recreation legislation and public lands planning processes, and catalyzing engagement on these issues. This person will serve as a bridge between our conservation policy work and the outdoor community’s education, awareness, and engagement on issues, to assure growth and impact.
A successful candidate will be an exceptional writer and communicator, and will possess a knack for translating complex policy into actionable content. We are looking for someone who shares a passion for the outdoors and conservation and is enthusiastic about engaging all current and future outdoor enthusiasts to protect public lands. They must be self-directed, have strong attention to detail, and able to problem solve creatively and independently.
- Lead development of all conservation-related communications for The Mountaineers and Outdoor Alliance Washington.
- Manage and create content for The Mountaineers and Outdoor Alliance Washington, including writing action alerts, blog posts, emails to supporters, social media messaging, and website messaging.
- Manage and write monthly Conservation Currents e-newsletter and quarterly long-form magazine contributions.
- Assist in managing our CRM platform, EveryAction. This includes setting up or updating action alerts, drafting and sending emails, and pulling lists and reports.
- Manage advocacy campaigns and initiatives for The Mountaineers and Outdoor Alliance Washington.
- Assist the Conservation and Advocacy Director in crafting advocacy campaigns from start to finish: building out messaging and social media content, engaging supporters through targeted communications, and monitoring and analyzing metrics.
- Identify and engage key supporters through email, social media, and digital events.
- Assist the Conservation and Advocacy Director in building partnerships with other outdoor recreation and conservation organizations and diverse communities.
- Identify key messaging opportunities to increase conservation engagement for our volunteers and members, as well as identify ways to engage more people of all backgrounds in public lands conservation.
- Collaborate with adult and youth programs teams to incorporate conservation and advocacy work into our trips and courses.
- Plan and execute advocacy events, including virtual and in-person town halls, roundtable meetings, and legislator meetings and events.
- Research and track conservation and recreation policy issues and public lands planning processes.
- Research and track outdoor recreation and public lands planning processes for federal and WA state lands to determine impact on conservation and recreation in the Pacific Northwest and on The Mountaineers mission.
- Develop comment letters in response to proposals, and research issues in comments letters that we are asked to sign onto.
- Research and understand emerging public lands conservation and outdoor recreation policy issues, and drive engagement and communication strategies on priority issues in collaboration with the Conservation and Advocacy Director.
- Attend coalition meetings on behalf of The Mountaineers and Outdoor Alliance Washington.
- Four-year college degree and/or three-five years proven experience with communications, policy, natural resources, advocacy, and/or engagement.
- Excellent writing and online communications skills and solid attention to detail. Strong portfolio of writing for general audiences, with the ability to inspire others to take action.
- A passion for the outdoors and conservation, and knowledge of current public lands conservation issues. Personal interest in human-powered recreation.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision while managing multiple projects. Holds self and others accountable for performance.
- Self-motivated with experience in fast-paced and deadline-oriented work.
- Strategic thinker who connects daily responsibilities to broader organizational goals and mission.
- Cultural competency and desire to work with people of all races, ages, genders, abilities and economic backgrounds.
- Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check.
This role is based in Seattle, WA, at The Mountaineers program center in Magnuson Park. Due to the pandemic, this position is currently 100% remote (work from home) and we anticipate it will remain mostly a remote position until Fall 2021. The Mountaineers will provide a laptop computer for remote access. The Advocacy and Engagement Manager is expected to have a suitable remote work environment, including broadband internet access, to accomplish their job duties.

- Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.

Salary and Benefits
This position is for a full-time, exempt employee. Salary range is $45,000-$55,000 per year, depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance, and paid sick, vacation, and holiday time. 401(k) retirement plan available after three months.
