The history of American Trails is a history of trail giants. Of people who, decades ago, before there were positions like state trails coordinator, or books like Wild, espousing the healing power of trails, stood up and said to everyone who would listen, we need to realize the value of trails. Men and women who embodied the quote from French poet Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”

American Trails participated in the largest ever Hike the Hill ®, which brought 123 hikers and trail organization representatives to Washington, D.C. to advocate before Congress and the federal government for trails and public lands.

The author walked over 4,000 miles from his home in Chadds Ford, PA to New Orleans and San Francisco. His goals were to learn something about his own behavior and beliefs, and also to learn about the lives and beliefs of the people he met along the way.

The thing that excites me is when I go out and I see people using our trails and I see families on the trails, you know? It pleases me and excites me that I’m beginning to, once again, see moms and dads and kids on trails, not just the mountain bikers.

The Professional Trailbuilders Association has honored Pam Gluck with its 2017 Roger and Harvey Bell Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding service to the trails community. The award was presented at the PTBA Trailbuilders Conference in Bend, Oregon, March 15, 2017. Pam provided the following letter in her acceptance of the award.
