One of the bridges built by the Youth Corps
Working on the trail is an education by itself.
The North Fork Trail is adjacent to the North Fork of the Middle Fork of the Willamette Wild and Scenic River and the Cascade Scenic Byway. It interfaces with the city of Westfir. Approximately 100 youth from the Westfir and Oakridge area built 4 miles of the North Fork Trail through difficult terrain.
There were 7 bridges constructed. All work was done using the Middle Fork Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) and the Oakridge Alternative High School (at risk youth). Because there are approximately only 180 students eligible at the Oakridge High School, this program has had a sufficient impact on the community.
Working on the trail is an education by itself. Part of the YCC and the Oakridge High School program is environmental education. Between the work and education, these young people have an appreciation of the woods.
