Winners have been announced for the 2017 Tom Petri Annual Achievement Awards in recognition of outstanding use of Recreational Trails Program (RTP) funds. The awards ceremony hosted by the Coalition for Recreational Trails was held in Washington, DC on June 14, 2017 at U.S. House of Representatives offices.

Attending the event were Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL), Rep. Tom O’Halleran (D-AZ), Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI), and former Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) as well as several other Congressional staff, and representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, and the Federal Highway Administration. Representing CRT were Marianne Fowler and Derrick Crandall, Co-Chairs, and Duane Taylor, Vice Chair and Awards Committee Chair.

The awards are part of annual efforts by national trails and outdoor recreation organizations to promote the importance of RTP funding to States across America.

Arizona Conservation Corps Mogollon Rim Ancestral Lands Trail Crew - Arizona

Through the Ancestral Lands program, Conservation Legacy supports trail improvement on the Mogollon Rim in the Coconino National Forest while providing jobs and experience for local Native American youth.

A major rehabilitation and boardwalk replacement project to preserve access on the Alaka'i Swamp Trail.

2017 Public-Private Partnerships Enhancing Public Lands Access and Use

Mountains-to-Sea State Trail/Fonta Flora State Trail Connector - North Carolina

Construction of a 3.0-mile hiking and mountain biking trail that traverses the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Game Lands to connect a proposed 30-mile loop trail around Lake James.

2017 Multiple-Use Management and Corridor Sharing

Middle Fork National Recreation Trail Improvements - Oregon

New bridges, trail reroutes, and improvements to the 27-mile riverside trail that included elimination of unsafe crossings for equestrian users.

2017 Construction and Design

Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area - Pennsylvania

Constructing a Trailhead Event Area for the off-highway vehicle park that includes an open pavilion, space for vendors, rest rooms, and all-weather storage for trail maintenance equipment.

Woodruff Greenway Trail - South Carolina

Development of a .82 mile 8-foot wide asphalt trail including two pedestrian bridges that connects the Woodruff Leisure Center to the Woodruff Middle School.

2017 Engaging Public-Sector Partners

Rountree Branch Trail - Platteville, Wisconsin

This project engaged several partners to complete a trail connection from the Platteville community to the University of Wisconsin campus, fixed infrastructure issues, and paved and lighted the entire three-mile corridor.
