Olive Hill, KY. (AP) - Mayor Jim Short is determined to solve a
problem Wyatt Earp no doubt confronted in the towns of the Wild West
p; drunk people roaming the streets on horseback.
Two horse riders have been arrested in Olive Hill since November on
driving under the influence charges, including the president of a
local saddle club. To Short, that adds up to a problem with drunken
riders. "I have watched people who have had saddle bags plumb full of
beer and publicly drunk," Short told a special city council meeting
Thursday night.
Short and Councilman Bob Wilson encouraged about 35 members of the
Eastern Hills Saddle Club at the meeting to help the city write an
ordinance to deal with the problem. The club could even use its
bylaws to expel members who drink and ride in the city, Wilson
said.
Club members repeatedly interrupted Short to accuse the police
department of being unfair to horse riders. But they all agreed that
drinking and riding horses do not mix.
