Runner on the Mount Mitchell Challenge, a run from Black Mountain, NC to the summit of Mount Mitchell on the Mountains-to-Sea National Recreation Trail. Runners climb over 4,000 feet for 20 miles, then after reaching the summit they descend those 20 miles. As if this route wasn't strenuous enough, the race is held in February when single-digit temperatures and wind speeds of 60 miles per hour are not uncommon. - photo by Matt Mutel, NC State Parks
