Funding trails: signs crediting grants and programs

Photos and commentary by Stuart Macdonald

Acknowledging the source of funding is important information for the public. The message that "trails don't just happen" is vital in keeping public support for the funding sources behind trails. The source of funds for land acquisition as well as facilities is also important. Some programs are specific to a locality, such as sales tax support. Other projects are funded by state sources, such as lotteries. And many trails are partly funded by grants from federal funds, such as the Recreational Trails Program and the Land & Water Conservation Fund. And finally, foundations and donors provide additional support. See below for examples of signs and plaques from around the country sharing the same goal of thanking the funder and educating the trail user.
