Signs stating the rules for use at access points and trailheads. Signs may cajole, plead, explain, or threaten the user entering a park or trail. Signs are an oppportunity to teach or remind users what is expected of them. The longer the sign, the less likely visitors are to actually read them. However, stating the regulations satisfies a lawyer-driven need that enables staff to enforce the laws. Trails and parks have many variations in what is allowed, so it is important to state clearly what is essential. Signs can also encourage more responsibility on the part of the user, such as taking away trash and being aware of other users.
