The Bureau of Land Management in the US Dept. of the Interior sponsors many courses and workshops through a variety of training opportunities. Trails, recreation, land management, technical training, and public involvement are topics that are frequently covered. The BLM has also been a leader in establishing and developing the National Trails Training Partnership.
Trail Management Process: Plans, Projects and People
The BLM developed and funded this interagency course which includes planning, design layout, construction, maintenance, monitoring, crew leadership, interpretation, operations, and safety. Field exercises include trail layout, construction and maintenance techniques. See currently scheduled opportunities to take the TMP course on the NTTP Calendar. Distance Learning Modules
The Bureau of Land Management also provides a variety of online courses and materials that are available to download as educational aids, such as PowerPoints, videos, and transcripts. Some examples:
Recreation Management Information System training is organized into topics developed as training modules covering Data Collection and Estimation, Special Recreation Permits, Sites, Partnerships and Agreements, and Reports
National Landscape Conservation System PowerPoints, notebook material, handouts, web links and other resources NLCS.
Leading the Recreation Program includes modules for Overview of Recreation and Visitor Services; Career development, competencies, and training plans; Leadership roles in community outreach and partnership building; Recreation tools ; Visitor services and resource protection.
Recreation on Public Lands includes videos and text for BLM's Priorities for Recreation and Visitor Services, Mountain Bike Strategic Plan, National OHV Strategic Plan, National Scenic and Historic Trails Strategy.
Visual Resource Management includes PowerPoints on Project Planning and VRM, VRM Management Classes, Environmental Factors, Visual Design Considerations, VRM Inventory Classes, VRM Management Classes, and Visual Simulations.
The Partnership Series: bringing agencies and communities together
These three-day classes are tailored to the specific community with current concerns and issues. They are designed to address the critical issues of building capacity in times of budgetary constraint, enhancing land stewardship and creating the partnerships that can sustain our mission into the future. National Training Center in Phoenix
NTC offers over 200 courses annually making it a primary source for BLM training in natural resources and leadership. However, NTC's service to the federal community doesn't end there, as many courses are available to employees of other agencies through a tuition program and many agencies of state and federal government use the facility on a cost-reimbursable basis.
