Nominations for designation of National Recreation Trails in 2006 are being accepted until December 31, 2005. Download the application form in Word format or PDF format.

American Trails is sponsoring the 2006 contest for photographs of National Recreation Trails across the country. Deadline for entries is August 31, 2006. View the winning pictures in the 2004 NRT Photo Contest and all 180 entries.

2005 National Recreation Trail designations have been made by the U. S. Department of the Interior. Announcement of the final designations was made June 3, 2005.

The Summer 2004 NRT NEWS is available with news and articles on topics of interest to National Recreation Trail managers.

Four trails on National Forests and Grasslands were designated as new National Recreation Trails by the Secretary of Agriculture for 2003. Trails on lands managed by the US Department of Agriculture go through a USDA nomination process.

Twenty-three trails and greenways were designated in 2003 by the Secretary of the Interior. See the lists of trails designated as National Recreation Trails in 2001 and 2002. Trails on local and private lands, as well as land administered by the BLM, NPS, and USF&WS go through a USDOI nomination process.

Whoever manufactures, sells, or possesses the National Recreation Trail logo, or any colorable imitation thereof, or photographs or prints in any other manner, makes or executes any engraving, photograph or print, or impression in the likeness of this insignia, or any colorable imitation thereof, without written authorization from the United States Department of the Interior, is subject to the penalty provisions of section 701.
