2006 National Recreation Trails Photo Contest/GAPchainsaw-PA.jpg

We Saw the Tree on the Allegheny Highlands section of the Great Allegheny Passage between Rockwood PA and Confluence PA. Most of the Great Allegheny Passage runs on wooded hillsides, and it's not uncommon for storms to bring down trees. Several of us carry pocket chainsaws (they roll up into a 3-4" tin), and when we find the trail blocked we hold impromptu work parties instead of beating paths around the obstacles (photo by Mary Shaw; all rights reserved).
