2009 RTP Achievement Awards

Award-Winning Trail and Greenway Projects

 

The members of the Coalition for Recreational Trails (CRT) have selected the winners of the "Annual Achievement Awards" in recognition of outstanding use of Recreational Trails Program (RTP) funds. The award winners were recognized at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 10, 2009 at the U.S. House of Representatives Rayburn House Office Building, during the annual celebration for Great Outdoors Week.

North Bend Lake Equestrian Trail (West Virginia)

Use of Youth Conservation/Service Corps

Construction of the North Bend Lake Equestrian Trail has been a true partnership of Youth Conservation/Service Corps personnel, volunteers and paid professionals from the Shiloh Riding Club, Doddridge County Riding Club, Wood County Horse Riding Club, North Bend Rails to Trails Foundation, Inc., Ritchie County Commission, Little Kanawha Resource Conservation and Development, West Virginia Division of Parks and Recreation, and North Bend State Park.

The North Bend Lake Equestrian Trail is a 16-mile trail along the shores of a man-made lake, which was recently constructed to provide flood protection, recreation and safe drinking water in rural Ritchie County. To date, the majority of the trail has been built by volunteers and Youth Conservation/
Service Corps personnel under the direction of employees of North Bend State Park.

The West Virginia Citizens Conservation Corps (WVCCC) provided a trail crew leader and crew members over the three years during which the trail was being constructed. During this period, the WVCCC also allowed this crew leader and part of his crew to use the skills they learned on the North Bend Equestrian Trail to finish two other RTP projects for other sponsors who had run into difficulties in completing construction in a timely manner. The crew leader has also helped develop applications and plans for other RTP projects in the area. In addition, the Student Conservation Association provided a trail manager and an assistant for three months during the summer of 2006.

Approximately six more miles of trail and two bridges have been proposed to completely circle the lake. If the final phase is funded, it is expected that WVCCC will provide the same work crew and leader to construct it.

Coalition for Recreational Trails:

The Coalition for Recreational Trails, a national organization representing the nation's major trail interests, has been working since 1992 to build awareness and understanding of the Recreational Trails Program, to support its implementation and to help insure that it receives adequate funding. The Annual Achievement Awards are part of the Coalition's ongoing effort to promote and celebrate this highly successful program, which has greatly enhanced the quantity and quality of trail experiences available to the public.
