	New bridge on the Wayehutta ATV Trail System

From the outset of RTP, one of its key focuses was trail maintenance and rehabilitation. Federal funding for trail design, for trail construction, and for land acquisition for trails is available from a number of sources. Only RTP funds maintenance, and that is crucial. So we're especially pleased to be able to present an award in the area of maintenance and rehabilitation.

The Coalition for Recreational Trails achievement award for Maintenance and Rehabilitation recognizes the Wayehutta Trail System of North Carolina. The trail system is located in the heart of the Southern Appalachians in the Ron Taylor Forest. This 28-mile loop trail system uses many old logging roads and rail beds used long ago to take the timber down the mountain to market. There are numerous bridges and culverts for stream crossings, silt fencing to keep dirt out of streams, and many, many dirt berms to control erosion on the trails.

From the beginning, one of the goals of this project was to protect the pure waters that flow through the area, home to trout as well as many other creatures. The trail system is in excellent shape because of innumerable erosion-controlling dirt berms, and even during torrential downpours, the streams run clean.

The CRT would like to recognize the Smoky Mountain ORV Club for the hard work and enthusiasm that they put forth to help complete this outstanding project. Present in Washington, DC to accept the award for the Wayehutta Trail System were Nancy Minard, Andy Minard, Melanie Broom, Amber Broom, Bill Blythe, Neal Blythe, and Rachel Blythe of the Smokey Mountain Club.
