GPS Mapping Specialist and Trails Assessor

Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) has identified the need for extensive trail and resource inventory. WSPRC in committed to providing recreation for all, including the maintenance and development of recreational and interpretive trails. Using Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS) technology, the location of trails, facilities, and various natural and cultural features will be recorded on-site. The field data will be entered into an agency-wide database and used for spatial mapping applications.

General Responsibilities:

Apply basic and advanced concepts of mapping grade GPS.
Learn and apply Trimble GPS software functionality.
Learn the standards and considerations for trail construction and resource maintenance.
Travel to various properties in the State Parks system.
Work cooperatively with park staff and project lead to gather all necessary data.
Hike, and occasionally bike or drive park trails and roads.
Collect photo documentation of trail features.
Work with and edit collected data, both within a GPS unit and on a laptop.
Provide completed data to park staff and project lead.

Required Skills

Must have prior experience with GPS.
Ability to hike long distances and for long periods of time on sometimes primitive trails.
Attention to detail with an affinity for technology.
Ability to read maps.
Strong interest in outdoor recreation.
Self directed and motivated.
Good communication skills.
Must have a valid driver’s license and take Defensive Driving Training to qualify for state vehicle.
Works well with people.

Advanced GPS training, specifically with a Trimble GPS using TerraSync and Pathfinder Office software. Basic concepts of GIS will also be introduced.
If personal vehicle is used, mileage will be reimbursed or state owned vehicle may be provided.
