Appalachian Mountain Club seeks Trail crew leader and Trail coordinator

New England Trail Crew Leader

This position entails leading a small crew on a large variety of trail maintenance and reconstruction projects throughout New England.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a crew of 4-6 professional trail workers and occasional volunteers on trail projects.
  • Maintain tradition of high quality trail work, representing the AMC trails program
  • Report to and communicate regularly with White Mountain Trails Programs Trails Supervisor.
  • Manage crew and project logistics in an organized, flexible, and creative fashion.
  • Document work completed and crew hours
  • Maintain and enforce safety standards at all times

Required skills

- experience leading trail crews on a variety of trail reconstruction and construction projects
- ability to perform the duties of a trail worker
- strong leadership skills
- ability to manage logistics and problem solve without direct supervision
- strong, professional communication skills
- self motivated
- ability to follow instruction without close supervision
- knowledge of hand tool use and care
- valid drivers license and good driving record

Desired Skills
- Certified Class B Sawyer
- Experience operating small equipment, such as bobcats, tractors
- Knowledge of overhead rigging systems and griphoist safety
- First Aid and CPR

Trails Coordinator- AMC Trails Program

The Trails Coordinator works closely with the Trail Supervisor (TS) to assist with the overall logistical management of professional trail crews and projects, signs and trail reporting, and other duties as needed to support the AMC professional trail crews and White Mountain Trail Program. The position is available for 6 to 10 months per year, with a possibility for a 2 year, full-time term. This is an hourly position reporting to the Trails Supervisor.

Responsibilities
-Provide logistical and field support of professional trail crews
-Assist in pre-season preparations, such as trainings, airlifts, hiring
-Provide the TS with input on current and future trail projects
-Collect field information as needed for planning and reporting on current and future trail projects
-Work with trail crews in field, as needed
-Perform administrative duties, as needed
-Other duties as assigned

Required skills and qualifications
- Self motivated, flexible, good at problem solving
Strong organizational and logistical management skills
Knowledge and safe practice of trail crew/work skills
- Working knowledge and experience with trail building and reconstruction techniques, (3 season minimum)
Excellent driving record
Ability to take direction, and give clear direction to others
Excellent communication skills
Physical ability to travel, work and camp safely in the backcountry on unimproved trails in all weather conditions, carrying up to 50 pounds of gear.

Desired Skills
- Knowledge of advanced trail building techniques and tools (rock drills, tri-pod
rigging systems, etc)
- Chainsaw safety certification, or ability to complete certification prior to start date
- Ability to operate machinery safely
- Administrative skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel
