APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 18, 2011

The Place
Baxter State Park has over 209,000 acres of mountainous wilderness and managed forest in northern Maine. It is home to Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine. While the Park is one of the largest wilderness areas in the eastern United States it also contains a network of hiking trails of approximately 250 miles. These trails are the arteries of the Park and offer a variety of hiking experiences that allow access to the many lakes, rivers, streams and mountain tops throughout the landscape of the Park.

The Position
The Trail Maintenance Division of Baxter State Park is looking for a mature, self-motivated, and energetic individual(s) for a Trail Inventory Intern position(s). This position(s) will be involved with: the collection of trail condition data, assessing pre-existing trail structures’ condition, prescribing new structure(s) layout, GPS data collection, trail sign inventory, data management and other duties relating to capturing and recording the current condition of the Park’s trails and creating a database for future trail maintenance management decisions.

The Opportunity
The Trail Inventory Intern(s) will have the opportunity to hike and explore the many regions of the Park. Intern(s) will work as part of a small independent unit, helping to record trail conditions for “big picture” trail management decisions. Intern(s) can expect to develop an eye for critically evaluating trail structures and overall trail conditions. In addition to building on professional skills, intern(s) will be roving throughout unique and exciting outdoor recreational resources within the Park and the surrounding landscape, where fishing, hiking, and boating opportunities abound.
