Forestry Technician – Recreation, Trails, and Wilderness
1 Permanent Full-Time (PFT) Position

GS-0462-5 (Full Time-Recreation, Trails and Wilderness) Rochester, VT

The Green Mountain & Finger Lakes NFs is seeking interested candidates for filling a Recreation and Trails Technician (GS-0462-5) position on a permanent full-time basis. The duty station is in Rochester, Vermont; information about the Rochester and surrounding area can be found at http://www.rochestervermont.org/.

Recreation on the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests is an exciting and complex mix of seasonal and year-round uses. This position is responsible for integrated day-to-day field management of recreation, trail and wilderness resources. Successful applicants will be excellent communicators, safety conscious, and willing to work with a wide variety of internal and external partners and public in support of implementing an integrated recreation, trails and wilderness program of work.

Core Duties: The successful applicant will be able to perform a wide variety of recreation, trails and wilderness management tasks in a field setting during all seasons of the year. They will serve as points of contacts with the recreating public and partners in support of maintenance activities. S/he will work closely with recreation staff across the Forest as well as with key stakeholder groups, partners, and sister-agencies.

Field operations and maintenance of recreation sites, including campgrounds and day use areas, to management standards.
Field operations and management of trails with uses including snowmobile, horse, mountain bike, cross-country ski, hike, and snowshoe.
Assisting in oversight and implementation of forest-wide recreation, trails, and wilderness program of work and purchasing process
Contracting Officer Representative (COR) – Field inspections of service contracts and heavy equipment oversight to ensure compliance and management to standard
Field inspections of recreation special uses to ensure compliance and management to standard
Forest Protection Officer – resource and visitor protection
Partnership liaisons – working and coordinating field activities with partners ensuring safe and productive work standards
Visitor education and information – primary field contacts in uniform
Collections officer – collect recreation fee money to standard
Field activities in support of the 10 Year Wilderness Stewardship Challenge
Assisting with routine district operations and facility maintenance – tool familiarity
Recreation and trails condition inventories (INFRA)
Assist in maintaining heritage and visual resources to standard

The position will be filled using the Open Continuous Recruitment announcement number ADS07-R5-RECREATION-5/6/7DP (for all U.S. citizens) and ADS07-R5-RECREATION-5/6/7G (government status eligible applicants). Applications must be completed in the Avue online system no later than March 8, 2010. The list of applicants will be pulled March 9, 2010 and the position is expected to be filled around May 1, 2010. A starting date of approximately May 10, 2010 is anticipated.
