The Wild Basin Preserve near Austin

Visit the 232-acre Wild Basin Preserve, one of Austin's oldest inner city natural areas. Wild Basin is a tranquil oasis in a rapidly urbanizing area and offers beautiful creeks, small waterfalls, and is home to the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.

Just a short 15 minute trip from downtown Austin, the preserve was established largely through the intense efforts of a group of dedicated neighbors who recognized the educational and biological value in the area's steep canyons and wooded hillsides. Experience the scenic beauty of the area as you hike the one-half mile easy access trail under the shade of juniper and oak trees.

Preserve staff will conduct an in-depth tour of this accessible, but challenging, hard-packed natural surface trail. Staff will discuss design, construction techniques, and long-term maintenance issues. Learn about programming ideas (such as the moonlight Halloween tour) draw people of all types to this popular trail.
