MCKINNEY ROUGHS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER
Take a look at a park that was developed from the ground up to gracefully acknowledge and accommodate its surroundings. McKinney Roughs is a 1,100-acre nature park and center dedicated to the teaching of land stewardship. It has 18 miles of multi-use trails ranging from rolling hills to river bottoms. Portions of these natural surface trails are fully accessible.
This has been the site of several statewide trail conferences and offers many educational opportunities. Learn about nature tourism, new technology, and leadership training. After touring the facilities and learning about the mission of the center, lunch will be provided. Then, three activity options will be available:
OPTION A GPS TRAIL CHALLENGE
Explore the trails of McKinney Roughs using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. You will be introduced to the basics of GPS and afterwards take a self-guided tour of McKinney Roughs' trails. Using the GPS, maps, and interpretive handouts, you will follow the trail from scenic uplands to the bottomland along the Colorado River. The three-mile round trip hike will be on natural surface trails that have a moderate level of difficulty.
OPTION B ROPES CHALLENGE
Work as a team and develop leadership skills in a fun and exciting atmosphere. If you have ever wanted the opportunity to experience a ropes course, this is your chance. Facilities include a 45-foot climbing wall, zip line, and giant swing. After an orientation to the facilities, participants will start on a required series of course elements that focus on innovative group achievement, as well as, individual accomplishment. By nature of the events, participants will encounter challenges that have greater interpersonal intensity.
OPTION C RAFTING ON THE COLORADO RIVER
Explore the natural side of the Colorado River on a popular river-rafting trip that will cover five miles of calm water, scenic views, and abundant wildlife. This is a great trip for expert and novice rafters alike with an interest in birding, boating, and nature tourism. Rafts, equipment and instruction provided.
