American Trails and our member organizations, communities, and agencies support efforts to bring trails into our daily lives. As our nation looks closely at public health, transportation, urban development, and the environment, we see lots of problems. We know trails, greenways, bikeways, and other routes to be part of the solution.
American Trails’ vision is of trails within 15 minutes of every American home. And, we support efforts to link community trails to neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces. The health of our children, as well as our cities, will depend on preserving parks, open space, transportation choices, and places for recreation.
Michele (Kebea) Adams is the co-owner of Adams Acres Farm; a Board Member on the New Jersey Horse Council (NJHC); and is currently serving as the appointed representative to the State of New Jersey Trails Council, Equestrian Adviser. Michele maintains membership with the competitive distance and user trail groups: New Jersey Trail Ride Association (NJTRA), Eastern Competitive Trail Ride Association (ECTRA); the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC), the Horseman’s Association of Millstone Township (HAMT); and the Colts Neck Trail Ride Association (CNTRC). For the last five years, Michele has worked closely with New Jersey’s DEP and DOT to assist in the update of the State’s NJ Trails Plan; and continues to serve as a member of the Trails Plan Advisory Committee.

Steven W. Anderson is a Field Manager for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM in Redding, California. He oversees a staff of 35 and an area of 275,000 acres. His career has spanned 29 years. He started his career working for State Parks in Illinois and for over 25 years has called the western United States home. His career has included not only working for BLM but also, National Parks, Forest Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Peter Axelson is the founder of Beneficial Designs, a firm specializing in the design, development, and testing of adaptive equipment for people with disabilities. Beneficial Designs developed the Universal Trail Assessment Process (UTAP) and the High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process, a systematic method of measuring outdoor recreation trails to create trail accessibility information through signage. Peter’s company also helped with the development of accessibility standards for ski areas, amusement parks, and other outdoor recreation environments.
Paul Ayers is a Professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science, University of Tennessee. He teaches GPS and GIS applications. He developed a GPS-based Canoe/Kayak- mounted Underwater Video Mapping System (UVMS). The UVMS is used for developing GIS-based maps of the river systems provide large-scale comprehensive description of aquatic habitat used for river system management. He has been involved in land and water GPS-based trail mapping for the past 15 years.
Diane Banta is an Outdoor Recreation Planner with the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program. Starting her career in the IL DNR Youth Conservation Corps, she then joined the NPS (Mammoth Cave, Cape Hatteras, Smoky Mountains, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and Cuyahoga Valley NP). With 30 years of service, Diane now works in Illinois with non-profit organization and state and local governments to preserve open space, greenways planning and trails projects.
Mitch Barloga has served as the Non-Motorized Transportation and Greenways Planner for the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) since 2003 working with government and the public to improve pedestrian & bicycle mobility, including water trail access. Mitch is a Board member on the Greenways Foundation and the Crown Point Plan Commission, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). He also assists a number of “ped and pedal” advocacy groups in the NW Indiana. Mitch lives as a “happy bachelor” with his 10-year old son (and fellow baseball nut) Samuel.
David Bartoo, Trail Planner, DE Division of Parks & Recreation holds an AAS in Forestry/Land Surveying from Paul Smiths College, BS in Geology from SUNY at Oneonta, and MS in Ecology/Environmental Administration from Antioch. David conducted research for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. As a wilderness guide in the South and Northwest, he shared his love for nature and outdoor adventure. He volunteered to collect GPS trail data for Delaware State Parks. David has been the State Park Trail Planner for 12 years.
Tim Beaty is a 35 year veteran of the US Forest Service that currently serves as their
National Partnership Coordinator for senior, youth and volunteer programs. He was
the agency’s coordinator for the largest single service project ever received from a volunteer organization by the Forest Service. A longtime educator Tim has been a lead instructor for Conservation USA and helped to establish its National Training Cadre.
Roger Bell, PhD, a Californian and former college administrator, just sold his trail contracting business after some 40 years designing and building trails in 14 states. Past President of the Professional Trailbuilders Association, he has been a Board member of American Trails since 1996 and recently authored Trail Tales, a book of poems about his adventures as well as articles about kids and trails.
Laura Belleville, Director of Conservation. Laura currently oversees all aspects of A.T. management for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. She is a conservation manager with over 20 years of experience. Her work has largely been focused in the non-profit sector, including work with the National Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy. Laura has worked extensively with local communities, promoting biodiversity conservation, recreational trails, and regional planning. She holds a master’s degree in biology.
Chris Bernhardt is the Director of Consulting Services for IMBA and has managed trail projects across North America and in Europe and Asia. Chris presents and has been published on the topic of technical mountain bicycle trails, and has worked with the Forest Service, National Park Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, and over one hundred state and local jurisdictions. He holds a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning from Portland State University.
Doug Blankinship, Volunteer.gov/gov Portal Manager and Senior Advisor to the Take Pride in America program. He also serves as the Chairman of the Federal Interagency
Team on Volunteerism (FITV) and is a board member of the Association of Leaders in
Volunteer Engagement (Al!ve). Doug has helped spearhead the development and advancement of the Conversation USA that holds much promise for building capacity within the ranks of natural and cultural resource volunteer crew leaders.
Kerry Blind, FASLA, LEED AP is the president and founder of Ecos Environmental Design, Inc.. Founded in 1994, Ecos has been a leader in sustainable planning and design throughout the Southeast and along the Eastern Seaboard. From the earliest days of his career, his professional experience has consistently been geared toward environmentally sensitive and sustainable planning and design. He has been a leader in the innovative integration of sustainable stormwater management practices into the site and landscape. A graduate of Purdue University, Mr. Blind worked for Heery in Atlanta and Walt Disney enterprises in Orlando prior to opening his first practice in Florida.
Ben Blitch is a professional trailbuilder and artist with the ethic of a grassroots organizer. His projects are literally rideable works of art that bring children and adults alike out of the margins, onto bikes, and into a more kinetic lifestyle
Maureen Bonness is on the Board of Directors of the Naples Pathways Coalition, a non-profit group dedicated to improving bike/ped conditions in southwest Florida. She chairs the committee for the River of Grass Greenway (www.evergladesROGG.org), a proposed multi-use pathway across the Everglades. In her "day job", Dr. Bonness is an independent environmental consultant. She has a Ph.D. in botany. One of her duties is to manage a 225-acre nature preserve east of Naples (which, coincidentally, includes a technical mountain bike trail!). She is self-propelled whenever feasible, including commuting, touring by bicycle, mountain biking, and is an endurance triathlete training in the hinterlands of south Florida.
Bill Botten, an Exercise Physiology graduate from the University of Kansas, joined the US Access Board in May of 2000. Previously, he was Director of the Office of Accessible Seating/Services for Centre Management, a national sports arena management company. His responsibilities included ensuring compliance with State and Federal accessibility requirements at all managed properties, as well as working with design and construction officials during arena construction and alterations. His training experience includes hundreds of presentations over the last 20 years to local, state, and national audiences on injury prevention, disability awareness and sensitivity, and accessibility issues. He was part of a team that developed the new combined guidelines for the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Architectural Barriers Act. Bill specializes in access issues related to recreation facilities and outdoor developed areas. He also provides technical assistance to the building design and construction industry as well as State and Federal agencies and consumers with disabilities.
J. M. (Mike) Bowker is a Research Social Scientist with the Southern Research Station, USDA Forest Service in Athens, GA. Mikes research includes studies on the economics of forest and coastal recreation, urban forests, non-market valuation of wildlife and natural resources, and exploring linkages between ethnicity, environmental preferences and recreation demand. Together with colleagues, he has conducted research on the Appalachian Trail, Virginia Creeper Trail, and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail
Steve Buchtel is the Southland Coordinator for Active Transportation Alliance. He has helped suburban towns and public agencies win more that $4 million dollars in state, federal and foundation grants for bicycle programming such as Safe Routes to School and Shop by Bike, on-street bicycle facilities, and off-street multi-use trails such as the Calumet-Sag Trail, a 32-mile regional trail connecting 14 south suburban Chicago communities with forest preserves, transit stations, schools and downtowns.
Kevin Burke, who joined Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. in January 2009 as Senior Landscape Architect, has more than twenty-eight years of professional experience on a range of institutional, roadway, college and university, and park projects. Prior to joining ABI, Mr. Burke was employed from 2005-2008 by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority as a Project Engineer and landscape architect responsible for providing project management, design, and construction QA/QC services to support the various restoration contracts. Mr. Burke has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Utah State University, in Logan, UT, is a Registered Landscape Architect in New Hampshire, is CLARB certified, and is a NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) Accredited Organic Land Care Professional.
Doug Byerly is currently serving as the Forest Recreation Program Manager and Landscape Architect for Cherokee National Forest located in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of east Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned a Master of Landscape Architecture degree at Louisiana State University.
Since 1991 Doug has served on the Malheur, Deschutes, Jefferson and Cherokee National Forests.
Jeffrey Ciabotti, VP for Trail Development, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
Amy Camp is manager of the Trail Town Program. She works with trail businesses and communities to maximize the economic potential of the Great Allegheny Passage and to coordinate regional efforts among the towns. Prior to joining the program, Amy led a number of marketing and heritage tourism initiatives in Pittsburgh, PA. Amy is a graduate of Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA and earned a Master of Public Administration from University of Pittsburgh.
Gregg Calpino, LEED AP, is a Landscape Architect with over $200 million in built master plans for parks, trails and civic spaces and leads JJR’s Parks and Recreation national practice. Accomplishments including Chicago’s Northerly Island, Lincoln, Jackson, Washington and South Shore Parks, Cleveland’s eight-mile Waterfront District and Canal Basin, St Louis; Forest Park and the Marquette Plan the guides public space, connectivity and re-investment throughout northwest Indiana’s entire 45-mile shoreline comprised of 18 diverse communities.
Thomas Chamberland is a Park Ranger with the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers, New England District. Tom has been involved with trail partnerships, and trail development and construction for over 10 years. He is the volunteer coordinator for three Flood Damage reduction projects in Massachusetts and is UTAP certified. Tom is recognized as an ABA compliance expert for outdoor accessability for the North Atlantic Division, Corps of Engineers.
Bruz Clark is the President of the Lyndhurst Foundation in Chattanooga. The Lyndhurst Foundation has been a longtime visionary and leader of downtown investments and the overall system of trails and connections throughout the Region.
John Collins, Associate Professor, Recreation and Leisure Studies Program, University of North Texas
Steve Coté, PE, AICP is a Senior Project Manager and Senior Planner for the Atlanta, GA office of Reynolds, Smith, and Hills, Inc. He is currently managing the design of the Douglas County Pilot Segment of the 94-mile Chattahoochee Hill Country Trail project in West Metro Atlanta. Steve has recently served as Project Manager for two trail alternative analysis studies for Cobb County, Georgia and the development of a Trail and Greenway Master Plan for Paulding County, Georgia.

Lucy Crown is the Parks and Greenways Planner for Buncombe County Parks, Greenways and Recreation Services. She has an M.A. in City and Regional Planning from Clemson University and holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Ms. Crown has worked for the Center for Community Growth and Change at Clemson University where she worked on the preliminary phases of the Reedy River Greenway in Greenville County, SC. Ms. Crown is responsible for the management and oversight of all contracted planning services in relation to greenway development in Buncombe County.

Tina Harvey Crawford is a journalist by trade and school – newspaper, radio and finally television – spending a total of 14 years in television – 7 of which she was as an anchor and reporter. After her daughter was born – her contact lenses changed! She entered the world of non-profit in 2004 at the Make-A-Wish Foundation but has spent the last 5 years at the Chattanooga Nature Center – as the Director of Development and Marketing. She over saw completion of several capital projects at the Nature Center including the construction of a quarter million dollar project – the Paddler’s Perch.

Jay Daniel is a Park Manager with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Jay is currently responsible for 51 parks. This includes the 1400 acre Memorial Park which is home to over 20 miles of sanctioned trail and has an estimated 4 million users per year. He holds a B.S. in Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences from Texas A&M University and is currently enrolled in that department’s M.S. program.
Dave Davenport has a diverse history in training coordination, construction management and Trail Contstruction. He is currently serving as a Lead Trails Specialist at Jeffco Open Space. For the past 3 years he has worked with Jeffco’s GIS analyst to oversee data management and collection, design collection standards, and write the Standard Operating Procedure for the Trails Section’s current GIS project.

David Dionne is Executive Director of Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama. He was Chief of Trails and Natural Areas for Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Superintendent of Baltimore & Annapolis Trail Park, member of the White House Millennium Council's Green Ribbon Panel on Trails, the National Endowment for the Arts' Committee for Art on Millennium Trails, chair of the National Board of Trustees for the East Coast Greenway Alliance, and chair of the Maryland Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
Anya Dobrowolski is a Master’s of Landscape Architecture candidate at the University of Oregon. She will graduate this December with a concentration in design theory. Her personal interest in outdoor recreation and professional & academic interest in design theory have led her to her thesis project concerning the planning, design, and maintenance of trailheads, and their potential impact on leisure constraints. Anya holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education from George Mason University.
Stefanie deOlloqui is the Associate Director for the Active Living and Transportation Network and currently serves as adjunct faculty for the Health and Human Performance Department at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Stefanie’s work focuses on policy, practice, research and the development of future leaders. She teaches undergraduate classes and works on local initiatives such as the upcoming bike share program, Safe Routes to School, and Emerging Leaders. Stefanie has over a decade of experience in upper management for the NC Division of Environmental Health and earned degrees from SUNY Stony Brook and Purdue University.
Marcie Diaz manages the greenway program for Parks and Recreation in Gwinnett County, Georgia. She oversees the planning, land acquisition, trail design and construction of greenway corridors throughout the County. In addition, she leads the trail mapping effort to GPS locate over 100 miles of paved and unpaved trails within the County's park system.
Christopher Douwes is the Trails and Enhancements Program Manager for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in Washington DC. He has managed the Recreational Trails Program since its inception in 1992, and the Transportation Enhancement activities since 2003. He manages contracts for research, technology development, technical assistance, and training for trail-related activities, and participates with the National Trails Training Partnership. Christopher received his Master’s of Science in Transportation from Northwestern University in 1990. Christopher’s other interests include helping with a church International Program (especially teaching English to speakers of other languages), Spanish ministry, and the choir; and gardening and walking.
John Favro retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 2008 after a 35 year career. His last position before retiring was Regional Trails Coordinator for the Northern Region. In that position he was the program manager for 25,000 miles of trails in 13 National Forests and Grasslands. He began his work with the Forest Service as a trail crew worker. He has taught classes on trails issues throughout the country. John and his wife own and manage a horse supply business called HealthyasaHorse NETwork that provides tack, feed supplements and other equestrian supplies for endurance riders.
Jim Felder put his experience in corporate communications and love of the outdoors together to promote the protection and enjoyment of the rich recreational opportunities in Alabama. He is the author and designer of several outdoor books. Jim was named the first Executive Director of the Alabama Scenic River Trail in January of 2009 and is the Governor’s appointee to Alabama’s newly-formed Recreational Trails Commission.

Spencer Finch is the Director of Sustainable Development for the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, where he manages Greenway initiatives in Southeast PA. The goal is to complete the East Coast Greenway (ECG) in Philadelphia, and Delaware and Bucks Counties; and hold together a multi-county and multi-state coalition to pursue innovative funding opportunities. The coalition’s most recent success was the $23 million TIGER stimulus grant received from the USDOT in February 2010.

Sheila E. Fleming is Senior Planner for Conservation Design with the Brandywine Conservancy in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. She came to the Conservancy in 1999 with a background in landscape architecture, and for over ten years she has been involved in community trail and greenway planning. Previously, she completed a post-graduate degree in Natural Resource Policy and Management at Cornell University and wrote a 100-page thesis report: Factors Influencing Resident Support and Opposition to Local Greenways.

Dr. Mark Fly, Coordinator of the Wildland Recreation Concentration University of Tennessee
Jim Foster leads the Heritage Trails Partnership, a Mississippi non-profit organization that grew out of the rubble after Hurricane Katrina. Jim and the Partners are building a safe, Coast-wide network of diverse trails that connect neighborhoods to businesses, schools and green and blue spaces where people can enjoy scenic, historic, educational and natural areas. This partnership was formed by Gulf Coast citizens working with the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program of the National Park Service. Jim completed a successful career in hospital administration and served Nashville as a Cultural Recreation Leader.
Kim Frederick has been Trails Supervisor since1979 for Jefferson County Open Space, located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains west of Denver, Colorado. He worked extensively on training issues as Board Chair of the Colorado Outdoor Training Initiative. His consulting company, Chinook Associates, works with organizations and agencies to develop and implement comprehensive trail and natural resource management plans as well as training programs.
Bob Fulcher, Park Manager for the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail is a recipient of the American Folklore Society's Botkin Prize for career achievement in cultural conservation. He established and directed the Tennessee State Parks Folklife Project in 1979, and has worked with the Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, National Endowment for the Arts, and other national, regional, state, and community organizations on natural and cultural resource management projects and presentations
Joann Green, Principal/Owner - Joann is a Landscape Architect with 33 years of diverse planning and design experience with multidisciplinary teams of planners, engineers, architects, and other specialists. She recently led a planning team for the Franklin, TN Greenway and Open Space Master Plan and led the landscape architectural efforts for the Legacy Trail in Lexington, KY. Joann has managed implementation of over 60 miles of trail and overseen planning efforts for over 200 miles of trails and greenways.
Bill Gibson is the BLM Arizona State Office Trails and Travel Management Coordinator. He has worked for the BLM nearly 31 years as an archeologist, land use planner, wilderness ranger and recreation planner. Since 1997, Bill has conducted a statewide route inventory protocol that involved Forest Service and State Lands units in Arizona. During this time, BLM has captured data on more than 30,000 miles of roads, primitive roads and trails on the National System of Public Lands. Arizona BLM has evaluated and analyzed approximately 60% of this transportation network, including BLM trails systems throughout the state. Bill is State Lead for nearly 200 miles of National Scenic, Historic and Recreation trails. He is responsible for travel management plan development, as the BLM is formally designating the inventoried transportation systems, which ncludes the aforementioned trails systems.

Donald Greer received his doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. His research interests include the economic and social impact of recreation resources and youth development.
James "Scott" Groenier, professional engineer, has civil engineering degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and from Montana State University. He worked for the Wisconsin-DOT, Illinois-DOT, and a consulting firm before joining the Forest Service in 1992. He worked as a civil engineer for the Ashley NF, Tongass NF, and Region 9, before coming to the Missoula Technology and Development Center in 2003 as a project leader for structures and recreation.
Dawn Grosdidier is the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Lenexa, Kansas, which is located in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. She is a member of the 911 trail sign task force that implemented a local and regional 911 trail sign program. The program was developed in partnership with the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) and has been implemented in communities across the metropolitan area.
Jan Hancock is the principal of Hancock Resources LLC, a Phoenix, Arizona-based equestrian trail, trailhead, and campground design consulting firm. Her current projects include the development of trail systems for the City of Scottsdale, Arizona, and a recently completed trailhead design project for the Bureau of Land Management and the City of Las Vegas. Jan is a national conference speaker and the author of the 300-page FHWA/USDA Forest Service 2008 publication “Equestrian Design Guidebook for Trails, Trailheads, and Campgrounds.”

Dan Harding, Associate Professor of Architecture, Clemson University
Ron Hassel is the Program Director for the SCA Trails Corps. During the past 8 years, he has held a variety of positions within the SCA, including Program Coordinator, and Manager of the SCA Fire Education Corps, Director of the SCA Landfire Project, Director of the SCA FIREMON project, Corps Operations Manager, and most recently Director of the Trail Corps. Ron is an avid backpacker, climber, mountain biker, and skier and is passionate about sustainable living, minimum impact, and preservation of wilderness.

Richard Harris is a physician with a passion for hiking trails. Living in the East TN mountains, he is the TN/NC Maintenance Director for the Benton MacKaye Trail, sits on the TN Greenways & Trails Commission and is President of the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition. He and Liz Carter are writing a series of 3 guides to the BMT, each covering about 100 miles of the trail.
Cindy Heath, Special Projects Coordinator, Lebanon Recreation & Parks, Lebanon, NH
Executive Director, GP RED, Research, Education & Development for Parks, Recreation & Land Agencies. Cindy served as Director of Recreation & Parks in Lebanon, NH for 26 years, creating numerous special events, successful partnerships, and innovative programs for the community, retiring in 2009. During her tenure, the City was awarded the prestigious ICMA People’s Choice Award for Recreation Services. She also serves as the Executive Director for GP RED, a non-profit organization providing research, education and development for parks, recreation & land agencies, and is a Project Consultant for GreenPlay, LLC, a recreation & parks consulting firm.
Annette Heckart, Conservation Education Specialist for the Chugach National Forest – Annette has spent the last 18 years working in the field of interpretation and conservation education for the Forest Service in the amazing state of Alaska. Most recently, Annette has been working with the National Park Service, Appalachian National Scenic Trail to adapt the incredibly successful Trail to Every Classroom program to the Iditarod National Historic Trail. The Iditarod version of A Trail to Every Classroom (iTREC!) was launched in August 2010 and is currently in the middle of its pilot year.
Rita Hennessy has 20 years with the NPS, and more than 25 year history with the Appalachian Trail. She recently completed a Master of Arts in Community Change and Civic Leadership with a focus on Place-Based education and Service-Learning. Through her graduate studies, Rita created A Trail to Every Classroom. This three-season professional development program for K-12 teachers focuses on place-based education and service-learning and promotes a conservation ethic, civic participation, and healthy lifestyles by using the Appalachian Trail as a valued local educational resource. Other national trails are adapting TTEC for their uses
Matt Henry is presently serving as a Recreation Specialist for the Cherokee National Forest. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry with an emphasis in Outdoor Recreation Resource Management from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale. Since 2005 Matt has served on the Shawnee National Forest, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and the Cherokee National Forest.
Tim Herd, CPRP, is the Executive Director of the Stroud Region Open Space and Recreation Commission in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, and leads the development of its core greenway and trails systems. Meredith Holthaus is the President of Streamline Signage. She is 6th generation to a family in the sign industry and project manages large sign projects, from design to fabrication and installation. Meredith recently assisted to complete the ODOT’s Miami Conservancy District wayfinding project, covering eight districts throughout Dayton Ohio. Upon completing this project, Meredith has been creating an innovative software solution called the WayfindingManager, which allows one central location to manage an entire sign system.
Patty Huff is publisher and editor of The Mullet Rapper, the local newspaper for the Everglades City area. She retired in 2003 as an Investment Advisor for Raymond James & Associates. She received her M.B.A. in 1985 from Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Elizabeth (Liz) Smith-Incer coordinates the Mississippi Field Office of the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA) of the National Park Service. Wendy Jackson is Executive Director of the Freshwater Land Trust. Since joining the Trust in 2001, Wendy has preserved the 1,108-acre Red Mountain Park property in Birmingham, established the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, and spearheaded the Five Mile Creek Greenways Partnership. She has protected or helped to protect almost 8,000 acres throughout Central Alabama. Under Wendy’s leadership, the Trust became the first in Alabama to be certified by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.

Pam Johnson is the program administrator at Rancho Sonado, one of the Orange County California schools of Inside the Outdoors, a separately funded program of the County Department of Education. Students come to this day camp where the learning takes place outdoors at learning stations on trails. Pam is an expert in environmental education for kids. Thomas “Chip” Kneavel, Trail Crew Chief, DE Division of Parks & Recreation
As a lifelong Delawarean, Chip Kneavel’s first introduction to trail work was during a thru-hike of the 2000-mile long Appalachian Trail where he volunteered on multiple trail projects with the Appalachian Trail Conference. Shortly after completing his hike Chip began working on the Delaware State Parks Trail Crew in 2001. As the Trail Crew Chief, Chip coordinates trail construction projects within State Parks and its neighboring communities. He implements low impact building techniques that result in sustainable trails. He is a key liaison coordinating trail building and maintenance projects with volunteers. Chip has conducted workshops and services to trail managing agencies throughout the region as owner/operator of Infinite Trail Concepts.
Carl Knoch is Manager of Trail Development – Northeast Regional Office - Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC). Carl has been conducting trail user surveys and economic impact analysis since 1999. He has presented those findings at national, state and local conferences. RTC has been working with data collected from passive infrared counters to develop estimates of annual trail usage and to combine that information with spending data to estimate annual spending by trail users.
Diane Kripas is the Chief of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Greenways and Conservation Partnerships Division. This division is dedicated to fostering partnership between nonpublic and public agencies to encourage the protection of Pennsylvania's extensive natural resources, develop a statewide greenways and trails network, and expand local recreation opportunities. Her division is responsible for continued implementation of Pennsylvania's Greenway Plan and State Outdoor Recreation Plan.
Hans Landefeld - Developed and maintained trails for the Miami Conservancy District (MCD) for 12 years. During that time he lead trail agencies from a five-county area in SW Ohio in the design, funding and implementation of a regional trail signage system. Now retired from MCD, Hans consults on trail signage systems and trail construction projects. Hans walks the walk, or in this case rides the ride, and bikes about 100 miles a week to keep in shape.
Holly Larson is an Outdoor Recreation Planner with the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, based in Minnesota. She has worked in bicycle and pedestrian facility planning for the past 15 years, in both Maryland and Minnesota, and has been in her current position for 10 years, providing community assistance to projects across the state. She has created and led partnerships for park and trail development, building effective, sustainable teams with representatives from government agencies, trail user groups, the private sector and non profit organizations. She began her planning career in the trenches of community planning in Alaska and the Florida Keys.
Ursula Lemanski is currently employed as the Virginia Project Manager for the National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program. With over twenty years of experience in the field of community planning and natural resource management, Ursula has led inter-disciplinary teams and community partnerships on a variety of topics including trail and greenways planning; river corridor planning and floodplain management. Prior to working at the National Park Service, Ursula served in a number of positions in state, and local government, as well as in the private sector. Stuart Macdonald spent 19 years as Colorado's State Trails Coordinator and chairs the National Association of State Trail Administrators. Currently he produces the American Trails newsletter and manages the website at www.AmericanTrails.org. He also works with the National Recreation Trail Program and the National Trails Training Partnership, and was part of the committee which has proposed regulations for accessible trails under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Scott Martin is Parks Director of the Parklands of Floyds Fork in Louisville, Kentucky. Previously Martin led operations of the public park and recreational waterway system of Franklin County, Virginia where he served as Director of Commerce and Leisure Services. In this role he oversaw the Departments of Parks and Recreation and Economic Development and Tourism. After graduating from Boise State University he held a position with the Parks and Recreation Department of Boise, Idaho.
Elisa Mayes leads the 4-person SCA Trail Town Outreach Corps in sustainable community development projects in the Pennsylvania towns along the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail. She received her B.S. in Environmental Science from UNC-Chapel Hill and her M.Sc. in Urban Planning from the University of Groningen, Netherlands. Her desire to do community planning stems from her passion for the diversity of cultures and her previous work with the Adirondack Nature Conservancy and bicycle advocacy in Asheville, North Carolina.
Leslie A. Meehan, AICP is a transportation planner for the Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). She specializes in policy, planning and education for bicyclists and pedestrians. Her focus is to strengthen the connection between health and physical activity through active transportation. She sits on the Steering Committee for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and is co-chair elect of the Tennessee Obesity Taskforce.
Don Meeker is principal of Meeker & Associates, Inc., an interdisciplinary design firm. Don’s career has been devoted to designs that enhance the quality of the experience of in the outdoors while creating systems to aid the process. Don has developed signage standards for the National Park Service, Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Alberta Parks, and others. He coordinated the design of the National Recreation Symbols system. His development of the Clearview typeface – to aid aging and all drivers: was honored this year in the Cooper Hewitt Triennial. Anne Merwin is a public lands policy advisor at The Wilderness Society focusing on recreation and transportation planning issues. Prior to joining The Wilderness Society, she was the senior policy director for a regional watershed conservation group, and served several years in the private sector as an environmental planning consultant. She holds a J.D. and Certificate in Environmental Law from the University of Maryland, and when not in the office, can usually be found whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking with her husband and dog.
Matt Mihalevich, Trails Coordinator for the City of Fayetteville. His tasks include trail design, construction oversight, and property acquisition for the growing trail system in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In 2001, he graduated from the University of Arkansas in Landscape Architecture. He then worked for LandPlan consultants in Tulsa, Oklahoma, designing trails for 3 years. In 2006 he was promoted to his current position as Trails Coordinator and has been responsible for the completion of over 14 miles of multi-use trails including the 6.3 mile backbone of the Fayetteville’s trail system - Scull Creek Trail. Matt has also trained through the League of American Bicyclists to become a League Cycling Instructor (LCI).
Dr. Gregory A. Miller has served as President of American Hiking Society since 2005 and has more than twenty-five years of experience in biodiversity conservation, sustainable recreation, and natural resources program development. Previously, Dr. Miller led a distinguished 15-year executive career as a Division Vice President at The Nature Conservancy, developing the Conservancy’s conservation strategy and biodiversity project portfolio for South America.
Stephen Miller is Urban Pathways Coordinator at Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), where he facilitates the Urban Pathways Initiative, a nationwide network of trail advocates and professionals seeking to encourage physical activity along multi-use paths in low-income communities and communities of color. In addition to managing this national network, Stephen is a team member on RTC project work, assisting local partners along the Metropolitan Branch Trail in Washington, D.C. and the Lafitte Corridor in New Orleans, La.
Tobias Miller is the Trails Facilities Manager at Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has been involved with the Trails Forever Program since its inception. Tobias manages maintenance, rehabilitation and construction for the 850 miles of trails, 150 backcountry cemeteries, and 110 backcountry campsites in the Park. Tobias has worked in multiple National Parks as well as U.S. Forest Service and is a member of the trails working group for the WASO office of the NPS.
Nikki Montembeault is an Accessibility Specialist for the National Center on Accessibility. In her role as an Accessibility Specialist, she provides technical assistance, is involved in recreation facility and program accessibility assessments, trainings, and provides assistance on NCA research and consultation projects. Christine Olsenius has worked in water resource management for three decades, managing nonprofit organizations, developing national water programs and publications and facilitating regional watershed-based initiatives. She helped develop and now serves as Executive Director of the Southeast Watershed Forum, a regional center devoted to building leadership in land and water protection through education, training and regional dialogue. In cooperation with the National Park Service, the Forum hosted the first Southeastern Water Trails Forum in 2009 and is working to build a regional water trails clearinghouse to better promote southeastern water trails regionally and nationally.
Kelly Pack is the Manager of Trail Development for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in Washington, DC, where she RTC’s Technical Assistance delivery and managing place-based project work. Her community organizing and development experience includes work with local watershed organizations, trail and greenway planning initiatives, pedestrian and bicycle advocacy groups, and a regional brownfield redevelopment program. Jan Palajac, a Senior Landscape Architect with San Jose’s Public Works Department, leads a team of professionals whose primary responsibility is the delivery of capital improvement projects for City-owned facilities with the focus largely on the design and construction of trail projects. She also manages the environmental and storm water compliance program for many of the city’s public works projects. John M. Pflaum, P.E. is a Project Manager in the Denver office of WHPacific, a Native Alaskan-owned multi-disciplinary AE consulting firm. John has 39 years of drainage and flood control experience, specializing in multi-use projects that incorporate recreational uses and riparian and aquatic habitat improvements. He has served on a number of projects where modification of an existing low head dam or a utility crossing was necessary to provide recreational boating access. Notable projects include the South Platte River Greenway in Denver and the Arkansas River in Pueblo, Colorado. Mr. Pflaum will discuss these and other projects as examples of situations where hazardous boating impediments have been removed or altered to allow safe boating passage and provide additional benefits such as improved fish passage waterfowl habitat.
Jane Polansky is the Scenic Rivers Administrator for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and assists with collaborative efforts between the state and local governments as well as other state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations regarding planning, developing, and administering sustainable water trails and scenic rivers. She is a former park manager and pioneered the Harpeth River State Park Bluway in middle Tennessee. Todd Pokrywa is SMR’s primary liaison with government officials and departments relative to the development of the master planned community of Lakewood Ranch in Southwest Florida. He interacts frequently with local, state and federal agencies on a variety of land use issues. He earned a degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Waterloo in Canada. Robin Posey serves as the Program Officer for the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga. Tim Prather is an Extension Specialist with the University of Tennessee Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science Department since 1983. He has more than 10 years experience using GIS in agriculture and natural resources research and Extension programs, and for recreational purposes. He also leads the Tennessee 4-H GIS Program, partnering GIS professionals with youth to learn about their communities by collecting data with GPS and using GIS software to analyze, map and present spatial information.
Philip Pugliese was appointed Chattanooga's first bicycle coordinator in September, 2005. Actively engaged in bicycle advocacy, he has served as chair of the Chattanooga Bicycle Task Force and currently serves on the technical staff of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County-North Georgia Transportation Planning Organization and the Southeast Tennessee Rural Planning Organization. Julian A. Reed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. He is also an affiliate of the Prevention Research Center in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Reed’s professional interests include examining the impact of parks and trails on youth and adult physical activity patterns. He is an expert using direct observation methods to evaluate physical activity behavior. Matt Rice joined the staff at American Rivers in 2007 as the Associate Director for the Southeast Region. Bob Richards is the Tennessee Greenways and Trails Program Coordinator, working with the RTP and the Greenways and Trails Council.
Jennifer Rigby, MA, is founder and director of The Acorn Group and Acorn Naturalists. Jenny's expertise is interpretive planning and design and strategic planning for environmental education. She has managed several state-level program initiatives, including development of California's master plan for environmental education and the Education and the Environment Initiative. Jenny is also the newest member of the American Trails Board. ( Roger and Jenny recently worked together on a major project in Orange County, designing child-friendly trails and trail experiences.).

Karen Rudolph administers the arts and culture grants, trustee initiatives, and the unsolicited community giving program at the Lyndhurst Foundation in Chattanooga, TN. Karen graduated from Warren Wilson College, Ashville, NC, where she received a bachelor’s degree in Business/Economics and Outdoor Leadership. She joined the Lyndhurst Foundation in September 2007 following a two-year stint as a Peace Corps Volunteer where she worked with fisherfolk and students to re-establish island mangrove ecosystems in the Philippines. Prior to living overseas, Karen studied under master craftsmen as the Resident Blacksmith at the John C. Campbell Folk School. As an outdoor enthusiast Karen has built hiking trails in numerous National Parks and ascended into tree canopies as an arborist.
Iva Michelle Russell has been involved with the Tennessee Off-Highway Vehicle trailbuilding cause since 2006, when a campaign promise led to a 5 year legislative and organizational odyssey. A PR consultant by trade, Iva has made it her mission to see the Tennessee Off-Highway Vehicle Act become more than words on a page. In 2008, she lead the effort to create the Tennessee Off-Highway Vehicle Association (TOHVA). Currently, Iva serves as the Tennessee State Partner for the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC).
Jim Schneider served as trail manager for 60 miles of paved bikeways for over 15 years in Greene County, Ohio. Jim has been involved in the acquisition, design, engineering and/or construction of 30 trail projects.

Helen Scully is an outdoor recreation planner with the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program. In addition to other projects, she is currently the National Recreation Trail program coordinator for the Department of the Interior.
Chris Sheffield, American YouthWorks Environmental Corps Program Director, has been with the agency since 2000, making sure that all of his youth work projects are integrated with a healthy dose of conservation education and design concepts. Chris graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in communication and natural resource management and is currently a geography graduate student at Texas State University. He is a 2010 Audubon Together Green Fellow. In Austin, you can find him with his wife and two boys hiking, swimming, or collecting wild food on the Barton Creek Greenbelt.
Brad Shelton, AIA, Elemi Architecture: Brad Shelton is a registered architect with Elemi Architects LLC in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he worked with the Chattanooga Nature Center to develop The Paddler’s Perch, a lodging facility on the banks of Lookout Creek. Brad believes that architects must be responsible stewards of the environment by creating places that are based on sustainable design principles. He is currently working on several LEED certified buildings and is a proponent of efficient building design and conservation education
Parc Smith began working with the American YouthWorks (AYW) Charter School in 1995 in Austin, Texas as an environmental science teacher and Americorps crew leader. Over the past fifteen years he has molded the AYW Environmental Corps program into one of the most well respected trails organizations in the state. Parc has served on the Texas Recreation Trails Grant Review Committee; he was named the American Trails State Trail Worker of the Year in 2004; and was Trail Designer / Project Director for 2009’s Accessibility Enhancement Project of the Year from the Coalition for Recreation Trails. He has modeled American YouthWorks’ mission of transforming the lives of at-risk youth through education, service and green jobs training and was named the agency’s CEO in June 2010.
Ron Sill is Community Design Leader for Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc. He oversees a multidiscipline team of design professionals whose diverse portfolio includes trails, trailheads, and recreation facilities. Mr. Sill is a licensed Landscape Architect and is accredited by the US Green Building Council. He has lectured at Penn State University and writes on topics related to environmentally sustainable design.

Brad Smith worked for the Department of Defense in Washington DC before retiring to Confluence, PA. In 2008 Brad and his wife, Maureen, opened the Confluence Cyclery in the town’s former department store building.
Debby Spencer is the president of We Make Things Happen Corporation (WMTH), an economic development company that specializes in enhancing economic impact. Under Ms. Spencer’s direction, WMTH has completed numerous projects in Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky related to trail development and corridor management plans.
Dr. Steve Spencer is a Full Professor in the Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport Department at Western Kentucky University. He is the founder of the Outdoor Leadership Program at WKU, a 20 year old program in experiential education. He has an extensive educational and professional background in outdoor recreation, environmental education, and leadership training. He has over 20 years in trip-leading experience in back-country settings involving backpacking, hunter education, whitewater canoeing, and camping.
Judy Steckler is the Executive Director of the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain (LTMCP). Beginning in 1998, Judy participated in a series of roundtable discussions on the community, the economy, and the environment of the Mississippi coast. These sessions brought together business and community leaders across the coast who identified the loss of green space and open space as a major concern. As a direct result of these meetings, LTMCP was formed and Judy became its first Executive Director in May 2001. Since that time, 2,100 acres have received protection under the umbrella of LTMCP and another 1,500 +/- acres are currently under review for acquisition. Through partnership funding with the National Park Service/Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program and others, LTMCP has been instrumental in developing four blueways. Judy, a resident of Biloxi since 1963, grew up in Elton, Louisiana and earned her B.S. from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

gov. Keith is also an avid mountain biker and has ridden trails throughout the United

Kirsten Sittler is a Preserve Planner with the Lake County (Illinois) Forest Preserve District. As Project Manager for the Wayfinding Pilot Project at Wright Woods Forest Preserve, she led an interdisciplinary team to program, design, construct, and assess a new signage system. Kirsten is a registered Landscape Architect with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Eric Tamulonis is a senior associate at Wallace Roberts & Todd, a Philadelphia-based planning and design firm involved in park and trail system planning and design nationally. His current work includes master planning of Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama and the Parklands of Floyds Fork in Louisville, Kentucky. Other projects include planning and conceptual trail system design in rural areas such as Gauley River National Recreation Area and urban parks such as Houston’s Memorial Park.
Jack Terrell is the Senior Project Coordinator for NOHVCC, a non-profit, educational foundation. He is a past Chairman and current member of the Florida OHV Recreation Advisory Committee, a member of the Florida RTP Advisory Committee and is Land Use Chairman of the Florida Trail Riders. Since 1992, he has worked with federal, state, county and local legislative bodies, regulatory agencies, land managers and recreation planners to develop trail recreation opportunities for the public.
David Tuch is Vice President and Landscape Architect with Equinox Environmental, an Asheville based planning and design firm whose mission is to facilitate resource conservation and sustainable development. David holds degrees in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, and Conservation Ecology & Sustainable Development. He has been involved in more than 28 greenway projects that have lead to over 48 miles of designed or built greenways.

Mike Tully is the Director of Operations and Public Safety for the Lake County (Illinois) Forest Preserve District. Having worked for the Forest Preserves since 1991, Mike is responsible for grounds maintenance, natural resource management, forestry, landscape construction, building trades, mechanical services, facility operations, engineering, law enforcement and the summer youth conservation corps program. He oversees a staff of 95 full and 169 part time employees. Mike has an undergraduate degree in park management from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree from Michigan State University.
Karen Umphress has been involved with trails for almost her entire life. Her family
is made up of a bunch of avid campers and hikers and family trips through the US always included hiking. Karen has been ½ of the Government Relations team for the Minnesota District of the American Motorcyclist Association for the past 10 years. She is very active in trail orientated clubs and associations both within Minnesota and on a national level.
Robert Voyles is Director of Planning for the City of North Little Rock, a position he has held for the past 21 years. He served as Senior Transportation Planner for the central Arkansas MPO from ‘78-‘89, and planner in Memphis from ‘76-‘78. In a city of 60,000 population, he performs most planning functions. He assist with bicycle planning and the city was awarded the BFC Bronze Designation in 2009. Robert has a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Jeremy Vlcan is a trails project assistant coordinator at Beneficial Designs. Jeremy received his education degree from the University of Idaho in Outdoor Recreation and has experience in a variety of forestry, surveying and outdoor recreation related positions throughout the country. Jeremy is currently actively involved in several trail and resource projects including grant writing, marketing, planning, partnerships, design and layout, and construction. Jeremy enjoys hiking, biking, winter sports, working in the yard and volunteering with local trail organizations.
Karen Votava chairs the Bicycle Signage Working Group, which has been working to advance a major revision to bicycle signage nationwide. She is co-founder and served as first Executive Director of the East Coast Greenway Alliance. As Director of Open Space Planning for the New York City Planning Department she authored “A Greenway Plan for New York City,” a blueprint for 350 miles of greenways in the city, largely implemented. Karen has a BA from Douglass College and an MCP from Yale University. She is married with three adult daughters and two granddaughters.
Jamie Rae Walker, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist with Texas AgriLife Extension, Texas A&M University System. She works in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Science leading programs which provide technical assistance and continuing education for community leaders and boards, park practitioners, and volunteers. Jamie Rae’s emphasis areas include: Planning processes, environmental psychology, stakeholder participation and community building, policy and positioning for open space, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Carolyn Ward is the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. She also serves as the Editor for the Journal of Interpretation Research and actively conducts environmental education and interpretation research throughout the country. She started the Kids in Parks initiative for the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation in 2008 after retiring from Humboldt State University where she served as a Professor for 12 years.

Staci Williams joined the American Rivers staff in May of 2009 as the Waccamaw River Blue Trail Organizer and has since begun working with local communities to protect this unique black water river. She previously served as a Project Director for Conservation Voters of South Carolina focusing on land use issues in Horry and Georgetown Counties. Staci earned a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in 2001 and graduate studies at Coastal Carolina University.
Andy Wright is a Tennessee State Park Ranger on the Cumberland Trail, where his duties include law enforcement, search and rescue, interpretation, and resource management. The true spirit of the Volunteer State is revealed through the Cumberland Trail. Annually, thousands of volunteer hours are logged in trail building, interpretation, and resource protection. Andy and other CT staff are constantly searching for new ways to include additional stakeholders in the completion and protection of the CT.
Tim Witsil is Design Visualization Director for Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc. He has a background in fine arts with more than a decade of industry experience. He specializes in communicating complex technical information about planning, design, and construction processes to audiences from every walk of life. Mr. Witsil is an expert in the use of 3D modeling, animation, and web-based graphics as communication tools.
