National Trails Day celebrates Community Millennium Trails
The Community Millennium Trails is the final leg in the three-part national initiative to spark the creation or enhancement of trails across America. Each of the more than 2,000 Community Millennium Trails will join a select group of 16 National Millennium Trails and 50 Millennium Legacy Trails designated by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater last year.
National Trails Day and Millennium Trails
National Trails Day, the American Hiking Society's nationwide celebration of trails and their significance in our lives and communities, is always a stirring event. This year, National Trails Day will have an added theme&emdash; it will also be a celebration of Millennium Trails. On June 3 thousands of Americans will honor their local Community Millennium Trails by paying tribute to trails' unique contributions to local culture and lore. The designation of the Community Millennium Trails will create a network of trails that connect Americans with their land, their neighbors, and ultimately, with their past and their future.
Get Involved, Make a Difference
Do you have a favorite local trail you would like to see receive the recognition and use that it deserves? Do you have a great idea for a trail project, but need help getting it off the ground? All kinds of trail projects are encouraged to take part, from historic trails that teach us about our past, to paths for hiking and biking, to scenic tours of exceptional beauty.
Every community can forge Millennium trails to connect people to their land, their history and their culture. These will include hiking trails, bicycle paths, greenways and scenic byways through rural and urban landscapes and cultural and heritage trails that preserve and commemorate major events in our nation's history. What stories do the buildings, monuments, parks and businesses in your community tell?
Every Community Millennium Trail will receive a special Millennium Trails marker. They also will be linked together on the Millennium Trails Web site. Each of the more than 2,000 Community Millennium Trails will celebrate their stories on National Trails Day, June 3, 2000.
