Shepherdstown, West Virginia
The National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) offers a unique and diverse range of conservation training courses, designed by and for the conservation professional. Topics range from coldwater fish culture to habitat conservation planning, from environmental negotiation to building community support for natural resource programs.
Courses which may be of interest to trails and greenways advocates include:
Self-Study Course: Rights-of-Way Habitat Management
Developed by Fish and Wildlife Service biologists managing utility corridors, with input from utility industry representatives and the Edison Electric Institute, this video training provides an overview of the various methods, costs, and impacts of vegetation control and habitat enhancement on utility corridors. The course includes case study presentations from both Federal land managers and industry representatives on actual partnerships to manage existing right-of-way habitats in meeting both utility and local conservation objectives.
Objectives:
Length: 2 days/12 hours - Availability: Constant - Contact: glenn_gravatt@fws.gov - Phone: (304) 876- 7456
Classroom and field course: Trail Management: Plans, Projects and People
NCTC also coordinates the week-long class teaches the trail management process, a collaborative process that includes planning, design layout, construction, maintenance, monitoring, crew leadership, interpretation, operations, and safety.
NCTC staff continuously are working with field personnel, instructors, and other conservation experts to develop and deliver high-quality and timely training. While some courses have been developed specifically for Fish and Wildlife Service employees, most are a good match for any conservation professional.
NCTC can even deliver training to you via satellite-based distance learning productions, or in self-study modules, so you can still take NCTC courses when it's not possible to come to Shepherdstown.
NCTC offers many other technical services for natural resource organizations and professionals. We can even customize our offerings to meet the specialized needs of your agency or organization. Call us at (304) 876-7472 to see how we can meet your individual needs!
