Green Ridge State Forest & Rocky Gap State Park Trail Project sponsor:
Maryland Department of Natural
Resources This project serves as an excellent example of the use of effective communication and education as part of recreational trail projects. Our award in this category goes to the Green Ridge State Forest and Rocky Gap State Park Trail in Flintstone, Maryland. In 1992, Green Ridge received approximately 140,000 visitors; ten years later, that number had climbed to 200,000.
Because of the RTP, Green Ridge and Rocky Gap are able to provide quality brochures, directional trail signage, and wayside exhibits with positive environmental messages throughout the trails system. RTP funds were also used to purchase a LCD projector and a digital camera, and to prepare and present Power Point slide programs promoting Recreational Trail Grant programs for the public and state employees. With these and other communication tools, the Green Ridge State Forest and Rocky Gap State Park Trail are leading the way toward more effective trail-related education and communication. The Coalition for Recreational Trails is pleased to present the CRT Annual Achievement Award for Education and Communication to Francis Zumbrun, Forest Manager of Green Ridge State Forest, Jeffery Ruark, Assistant Manager of Rocky Gap State Park, and Chris Anderson, Regional Manager for the Maryland State Forest and Park Service.
