January 5, 2012 — Restoration Strategies for Cedar Creek Trails

- Show Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen is spearheading a movement to restore sections of the Cedar Creek Trail on national forest lands between Columbia and Fulton, Missouri. The US Forest Service will lead a discussion of needs and Missouri equine users will talk about what they hope to achieve and to determine the level of interest in creating a new chapter of the organization. December 3-4, 2011 — SOLO Wilderness First Aid Course
- White Mountains, NH
- The ability to apply basic backcountry first aid is vital for any outdoor enthusiast, whether it's for yourself or others. Moving beyond urban first aid, this course teaches the skills necessary to identify and treat medical issues common to wilderness settings and to prepare for long-term care scenarios. Includes hands-on practice and lectures. Upon completion, participants receive 16-hour Wilderness First Aid certification. This course may be used to recertify a current WFR certification. Minimum age 18 (16 if accompanied by an adult). A CPR certification MAY be offered if the instructor is trained and willing to offer the course in the evening. Package includes lodging, meals, and instruction, handouts and WFA certification with successful completion of course. Member package rate starts at $215 per person, instruction only $160 per person. November 12, 2011 — 1st Annual Massachusetts Trails Conference

- The MA & PA Heritage Trail, Inc. is organizing a walk of county leaders along the proposed route that would connect the two segments of the trail from Forest Hill to Bel Air. The trail currently consists of two unconnected sections totaling 5.75 miles, with a gap of three miles. Media are invited to cover the event. Walkers will traverse a route that will approximate where the trail could be constructed, using public right-of way for the majority. There remains a small segment that is privately-owned, and this is one of the issues the group is working to address. The not-for-profit group meets quarterly to discuss issues of importance and look at ways to improve the trail for citizens of Harford County and visitors.

September 10-11, 2011 — Crosscut Saw Skills Training for the Homesteader and Backcountry Enthusiast

- The first day we'll cover the history of the crosscut in early America to it's present day use. We'll cover maintenance and sharpening and then head out into the field and cover bucking, limbing, and felling techniques with both ax and saw. On the second day participants will be able to apply their skills with an all day practical session trying their hand at felling, bucking, and limbing. No prior experience required. Participants who have their own crosscut saws (dull or sharpened) and axes please bring to the course as well as other personal protective equipment such as gloves, hardhat, and eye protection. Otherwise these materials will be provided by the instructor. Cost: $100 per person. Instructor Ryan J. Harvey, is the lead crosscut sawyer for the White Mountain National Forest where he has served as trails foreman for the Pemigewassett District.

- This four-week program is designed for those interested in pursuing trails leadership education or have a special passion for stewardship. This course includes a Leave No Trace Trainer certification and then a SOLO Wilderness First Aid course and certification. Trail maintenance projects may include brushing, drainage cleaning, rock work, bog bridging, and new trail construction. Classroom (rest days) focus on backcountry skills and ethics, conservation education, and recreation management. Participants will complete a variety of trail maintenance projects and trainings in backcountry living and ethics. Please remember that the trail crew work will be strenuous and demanding, and that we'll be out rain or shine. During the week, for each of the four weeks, the group will be packing out all food supplies, tools, camping equipment, and personal belongings into the woods with their crew leaders, learning new skills while working on trails at remote sites.

- Limit 24 per class. Hosted by Florida Trail Association for trail folks but useful for anyone who wants indepth knowledge of how to use a GPS. There is a $50 DEPOSIT required for all classes to cut down on 'no-shows'. Topics to be covered include: *What is GPS? *Capturing waypoints and tracks *Navigating routes and tracks *Using GPS with topos, aerials, and GoogleEarth *Computer software *Selecting a field GPS unit *Available GPS resources. The workshop will alternate between classroom and field time so everyone will develop a lot of 'hands on' knowledge.
