Green Mountain Club seeks Membership and Volunteer Coordinator

Job Title: Membership and Volunteer Coordinator/Director
Reports To: Executive Director

Job Summary:

This full-time position is responsible for GMC membership and volunteer coordination and development. This includes maintaining and increasing GMC membership and volunteer resources. Membership Program responsibilities include coordinating membership recruitment and renewal efforts, answering member questions, and supporting the fourteen GMC sections on membership administration and related issues. Volunteer Program duties include recruiting volunteers and placing them in appropriate projects, supervising office volunteers on a weekly basis, and coordinating volunteer recognition.

Job Duties:

Membership Program

· Respond to membership related inquiries and requests.

· Work with GMC sections: assist section officers and members with inquiries, prepare mailing labels for section newsletters, prepare monthly updates and address membership administrative issues, maintain section membership contact orientation packet.

· Coordinate membership recruitment efforts: write letters and applications, rent and trade mailing lists, coordinate annual direct mail appeal and phonathons, assist with membership outreach events.

· Welcome new members: coordinate and update new member packet, organize premium mailings.

· Write and arrange monthly mailings of annual at-large and section renewals and follow-up notices.

· Contribute to GMC communication initiatives in print and on-line

· Supervise management of membership database and monitor membership counts.

· Assist directly with data entry on an occasional as-needed basis during peak seasons.

· Oversee coordination of Club's annual meeting, club officer meetings, and other member events.

· Serve as staff support to the Membership Committee and Nominating Committee.

Volunteer Programs

· Respond to volunteer related inquiries and requests.

· Recruit volunteers for projects both on and off the Long Trail: work with staff, sections, and on special projects and process volunteer information.

· Supervise office volunteers on a weekly basis.

· Coordinate the trail and shelter adopter program and assist with the corridor monitoring program: work with volunteer coordinators and staff on recruitment, mailings, and updating databases.

· Coordinate quantitative tracking of volunteers and volunteer recognition through awards, events, and formal acknowledgment.

· Serve as staff support to the Volunteer Committee.

The executive director provides direct supervision through informal and scheduled meetings. The membership and volunteer coordinator supervises volunteers and interns, at times on a daily basis. This can demand minimal to substantial oversight depending on the participants and/or project. Supervision skills include providing clear instructions & communications, preparing project materials and work space, and building positive working relationships.

For membership administration this position works closely with the Membership Assistant. Membership and Volunteer matters require working with all staff in varying capacities at different times. In both areas the coordinator works with members and volunteers (individuals and groups), and solicits print shops and bulk mail vendors. Fiscal responsibilities include developing membership program budget in consultation with the executive director.

Responsible for maintaining and increasing membership base, and for recruiting volunteers for projects both on and off the trail, for both ongoing and one-time projects. Maintain quantities for membership and volunteer literature, and for premium supplies.

Accountabilities:

- Continue efforts to maintain and increase the GMC membership and volunteer pool.

- Promote section membership and vitality and diversify GMC membership as a whole.

Qualifications:

· Experience in working for a member and/or volunteer organization. Demonstrated writing and communication skills, including development of informational and instructional materials.

· Bachelor's degree

· Strong working knowledge of word processing and computer database management. Experience with desktop publishing and database software desirable. Experience with Raiser's Edge, In Design, and Adobe software very desirable.

· Commitment to customer service. Must be able to communicate and work well with GMC members, staff, and especially volunteers. Must be self-motivated and capable of motivating others.

· Available for occasional evenings (e.g. weekday 6pm committee meetings) and weekend work (e.g. quarterly Saturday board meetings, annual meeting during last weekend of May or first weekend of June). Flexible scheduling, comp time.
