Continental Divide Trail Alliance seeks Executive Director
The Continental Divide Trail Alliance (CDTA) seeks an Executive Director to provide overall vision and management for the CDTA. The Executive Director has primary responsibility for leading the agency and working closely with the Board of Directors and staff in the execution of CDTA's strategic and operational goals.
ABOUT CDTA
The Continental Divide Trail Alliance was formed in 1995 to assist the federal land management agencies in the completion, management and protection of the 3,100 mile Continental Divide National Scenic Trail that crosses Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.
The CDTA is a 501-c(3) nonprofit organization with nearly 3,000 members working to increase public involvement, volunteer commitment and private sector support on the CDT. To date this grassroots movement has made a tremendous impact on the Trail: 9,500 CDTA volunteers have dedicated nearly $5 million of labor; Individuals, foundations and businesses have committed more than $14 million toward our efforts; and 2,050 miles of the CDT have been completed.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Executive Director has primary responsibility for leading CDTA, working closely with the 13-member board of directors and staff. She/he is a proven leader who develops and implements the strategic goals and objectives of the CDTA, builds partnerships to achieve the CDTA’s mission, and meets annual goals and objectives. The Executive Director builds a team of professionals and support staff to achieve CDTA’s mission and its annual and long term goals. The headquarters office for the CDTA is currently located in Pine, Colorado with the intent to move the office to Denver within the next 9-12 months.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides leadership and vision for the development and implementation of the Continental Divide Trail Alliance’s strategy, in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
- Works actively with the Board of Directors and the Development staff to increase funds to support Continental Divide Trail Alliance’s goals.
- Provides leadership for overall program vision and content.
- Effectively manages and leads a quality staff with focus on hiring, developing, and retaining the best.
- Oversees all operational aspects of Continental Divide Trail Alliance, ensuring effective use of resources and legal compliance.
- Presents Continental Divide Trail Alliance’s mission and program in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders.
- Provides leadership in recruitment and development of Board members and supports the effective use of the Board governance structure.
QUALIFICATIONS
Above all, we seek a proven leader who is committed to our vision and who can work collaboratively with our board, staff, and partners to increase the appreciation of and education about America ’s natural lands in the Rocky Mountain west.
Experience: Minimum of 7 years management experience, ideally in a nonprofit environment. Additionally, qualified candidates will have:
Skills in strategic planning, visioning, and the implementation of those plans in a decentralized organization
Proven experience in all types of public and private fundraising, securing foundation support, conducting and managing major donor campaigns, and experience with state, local, and federal government contracting
Experience in working with and leading board members, staff, and volunteers effectively
Commitment to staff empowerment and staff skill development
Knowledge of how to work with organizations in transition and how to develop new levels of capability
Solid understanding of budget management and overall requirements of resource management in a nonprofit agency
Experience with or knowledge of the Rocky Mountain west and national trail systems; strong commitment to the mission and vision of the CDTA
Some knowledge of public lands and how to partner effectively with government agencies to achieve results; understanding of characteristics needed for public/private partnerships to succeed
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
Strong project management skills.

Education: An undergraduate degree from an accredited four year educational institution is required; advanced degree highly preferred.
